Drage’s big day lifts S&T to sweep of Rockhurst

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) – Kristen Drage had a big day for the Missouri S&T Lady Miners hitting a pair of long home runs and driving in eight runs as S&T swept Rockhurst 8-4 and 7-3 on Saturday in Rolla.

The Lady Miners (21-17, 12-10 GLVC) had to come from behind in each game to defeat the Hawks (9-25, 2-15 GLVC) and run their winning streak to three games.

In the opener Drage put S&T on top in the bottom of the first hitting the first of her two bombs to straight away center scoring Lauren Briggs and gave the Lady Miners a 2-0 lead.

Rockhurst responded in the third scoring four times on two hits to take a 4-2 advantage.

S&T responded in the bottom half of the inning loading the bases with one out then Kassi Deibert emptied them with a double to left center to make it 5-4. The Lady Miners added to their lead in the fourth again loading the bases with Drage coming through with a bases clearing double to right center to make it 8-4.

That was all the run support Ashley Wallingford needed as she held the Hawk bats in check for most of the afternoon. Except for the third inning she retired the side in order five times and allowed only one other runner, a two-out walk, in the sixth. She went the distance allowing four runs on two hits while striking out four and walking a pair improving to 10-8 on the season.

Briggs, Drage and Krista Porterfield each had two hits apiece in S&T's 10 hit attack in the contest.

In game two the Hawks got out to an early lead scoring twice in the opening inning on a two run single by their catcher. The lead could have been more but a lineout to Porterfield ended the frame.

The Lady Miners got one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single by Drage driving in Jennifer Sardigal who had reached on a double.

Rockhurst added an unearned run in the top of the second extending its lead back to two, but S&T responded with two in the third to tie the game.

Drage got it started with a lead-off walk. She moved to second on an illegal pitch then scored on Deibert's single to right. Jamie Hatlan then came onto run for Deibert and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Coley Naughton. After a strikeout for the second out, Becky Davis came through with a single to right scoring Hatlan.

The Lady Miners regained the lead for good in the fourth. Porterfield and Briggs hit back-to-back singles to start the frame. A sacrifice bunt by Sardigal moved the runners to second and third for Drage. A wild pitch on the first pitch of the at-bat to Drage scored Porterfield with the go-ahead run and moved Briggs to third. Drage then made it 6-3 hitting a high towering shot to right field that cleared the back fence of the complex for her second roundtripper of the day.

S&T added an unearned run in the sixth when Briggs scored all the way from first on a dropped fly ball by the center fielder with two outs.

After a rough start Taylor Keal settled down the rest of the way holding the Hawks scoreless over the final five innings. She went the distance allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits and struck out five while walking just one to improve to 11-8.

The Lady Miners again pounded out 10 hits in the nightcap led by the trio of Briggs, Drage and Porterfield with two apiece.

S&T will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Drury University in a GLVC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
