(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners used a two-out rally in the fifth inning of game two to pick up a
3-1 win and gain a split with Central Missouri on Tuesday afternoon in Rolla. The Jennies won the first game
1-0.
The first game was scoreless through the first five innings despite both teams having some golden opportunities. S&T's (19-17) best opportunities came in the second and third innings. In the second inning the Lady Miners loaded the bases with one out on a pair of walks and a single but couldn't score as a foul out to the catcher and ground out to third ended the inning.
In the third Lauren Briggs led off with a double to the right center gap. After a wild pitch moved her over to third Jennifer Sardigal reached on an infield single to the pitcher but Briggs drifted to far off of third and was picked off. A pair of line outs by Kristen Drage and Kassi Deibert ended the third inning.
The Lady Miners had another great chance in the fifth putting runners at first and second with two outs but Drage's drive to deep center was hauled in for the final out.
Central Missouri (18-13) broke the scoreless tie in the sixth. Jessica Marble led off with a walk then stole second but was gunned down trying to advance to third by Krista Porterfield (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) on a fielder's choice off the bat of Nicole Norberg. A groundout to third was the second out that allowed Norberg to advance to second. She scored a couple of pitches later when Kasey Martin singled off the outstretched glove of Becky Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara HS) for the only run of the contest.
The Lady Miners had a chance to tie in the sixth getting a lead-off walk but couldn't move the runner around.
The Jennies had a chance to widen the lead in the seventh but a couple of solid defensive plays kept the game at 1-0.
Each team had six hits in the opening contest. Briggs had a pair of hits to pace the Lady Miner offense.
Ashley Wallingford was the tough luck loser in the opener pitching a complete game allowing a run on six hits while striking out six and walking three.
In the nightcap S&T broke through first with a run in the opening frame on a double to right off the bat of Drage.
UCM answered back in the second scoring on a single to left and tried to take the lead but Katie Smith fired a strike to the plate and Coley Naughton applied the tag for the out.
It remained tied until the bottom of the fifth. After the first two Lady Miners were retired on two pitches, Maggie Schroeder battled back from a 1-2 deficit to draw a walk. Sardigal then reached on an infield single to short. Drage was then issued a free pass loading the bases for Deibert. Deibert ripped the first pitch she saw off the pitcher for an infield single driving in Schroeder. Naughton then extended the lead on the next pitch when she was hit in the foot driving in Sardigal.
Taylor Keal allowed a one-out triple in the sixth before striking out the final two batters to escape that jam then with the tying run at the plate in the seventh she got a strikeout and a fly out to center to end the game.
The offense only mustered three hits in game two led by Sardigal, Drage and Deibert.
Keal got the complete game victory allowing a run on eight hits while walking two and striking out three to improve to 10-8 on the year.
The Lady Miners scheduled games against Missouri-St. Louis for Thursday have been pushed back to April 30 at 5 p.m. in St. Louis. S&T's next games will be at home this Saturday when it takes on Rockhurst beginning at 12 p.m.
