(Owensboro, Ky.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners split a conference softball doubleheader at Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday losing the opener
8-0 in five innings then rallied to win the night cap
7-2.
In the opener S&T (3-5, 1-3 GLVC) fell behind in the first inning giving up an unearned run to the Panthers (2-11, 2-2 GLVC). The Lady Miners had chances in the next two innings getting their lead-off hitter on in both frames but were unable to get the tying run across the plate. Kentucky Wesleyan blew the game open with a four run third inning highlighted by a three run double by Suzy Gentili.
The Panthers blew it open in the fourth inning adding three more unearned runs. Seven of their eight runs in the contest were scored with two away.
The S&T offense struggled in the first game recording only three hits. Krista Porterfield led the way with two hits.
Ashley Wallingford took the loss allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits with a strikeout and a walk.
In the nightcap the Lady Miners jumped on top with a run in the first inning when Kristen Drage doubled to center field driving in Maggie Schroeder from first base.
KWC tied it in the bottom of the inning on an unearned run.
S&T retook the lead for good in the third when Drage again doubled home Schroeder from first this time with a shot to left center.
The Lady Miners blew it open in the fourth inning scoring four runs on four hits. The big blow was a two run single down the right field off the bat of Kaylea Smith.
Taylor Keal threw a complete game four hitter allowing two unearned runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout to improve to 2-1 on the season.
S&T pounded out 12 hits in game two led by Drage's 3-for-3 showing with three doubles and three RBIs. Schroeder finished the game with a pair of hits and three runs scored. In all nine different players recorded a hit for the Lady Miners.
S&T returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when it opens the home portion of its schedule with a doubleheader against Lincoln University beginning at 1 p.m.
