(Arkadelphia, Ark.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners snapped its three-game losing streak with a late rally to win the second game
5-3 at Henderson State on Tuesday. S&T dropped the opener
2-1 in nine innings.
S&T (17-11) got on the board first in the nightcap scoring a pair of runs in the third inning on Kate Runyan's two out, two-run single with the bases loaded.
Henderson State (18-15) got one of those runs back in the fourth on a home run and then took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on a double and a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Miners responded scoring three times in the sixth to retake the lead. They had runners at second and third with one out when Jennifer Sardigal ripped a double to give S&T the lead back at 4-3. Kassi Deibert added an insurance run two batters later when she singled home Sardigal for the fifth run.
Taylor Keal finished it off by retiring the side in order each of the last two innings to snap her three-game losing streak. She went the distance allowing three runs on eight hits and struck out four while walking two.
The offense banged out nine hits led by Katie Smith with three and Deibert with a pair. Four others had a hit apiece.
In the first game, S&T jumped on top in the fourth getting back-to-back singles from Sardigal and Kristen Drage to start the inning. Sardigal advanced to third on Deibert's fly out to center then scored on Coley Naughton's sacrifice fly to right.
That score held until the seventh inning when the Reddies (18-15) got a one out single to begin the game tying rally. A wild pitch moved the tying run to second. Keal then came on to relieve Ashley Wallingford and struck out the next hitter for the second out. After a walk, HSU tied the game on a single and had a chance to win the game with the bases loaded but Keal got out of the inning with a groundout to third.
The game moved to the tiebreaker rule in the eighth and each side had a chance to win the game starting with a runner on second but couldn't score.
The Lady Miners put two on in the ninth with two outs but again couldn't get the clutch hit. Henderson State scored the winning run in the bottom of the frame on a walk-off double.
Offensively S&T was only able to scratch out three hits in the contest led by Sardigal, Drage and Deibert with one apiece.
Wallingford got the start throwing the first 6.1 innings allowing a run on five hits while walking two and striking out one. Keal suffered the defeat throwing the final 2.1 innings allowing an unearned run on two hits with a walk and three punch outs.
The Lady Miners return to action on Wednesday afternoon taking on Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Ark., beginning at 1 p.m.
