(Rolla, Mo.) – Jennifer Sardigal's walk-off double to right center with two outs in the bottom of the eighth gave Missouri S&T a
3-2 win in game two and a sweep of its doubleheader against Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday afternoon. S&T won the first game
2-0 behind a two-run homer from
Katie Smith.
In the first game on Saturday, the Lady Miners (16-8, 9-5) squandered a scoring chance getting a pair of runners on but couldn't drive them around in the opening inning. S&T did get on the board in the second on Smith's first home run of the season, a line drive shot to left center, for the game's only runs.
S&T had a chance to extend its lead in the fourth inning but a couple of great defensive plays by the Parkside (7-9, 0-4 GLVC) defense kept it a 2-0 game.
The Rangers mounted their first scoring threat of the contest in the fifth putting two on with one out but Ashley Wallingford worked out of the jam getting a fly out to right and a strikeout to end the threat.
Parkside threatened again in the seventh putting the tying runs on with nobody out before Wallingford was able to nail down the victory retiring the last three hitters she faced.
The Lady Miners had five hits in the contest led by Smith and Kate Runyan with two apiece. Kaylea Smith had a double for the fifth hit.
Wallingford improved to 8-4 on the season tossing a complete game six-hit shutout. She struck out five and walked two winning for the seventh time in her last eight starts.
In the nightcap, S&T took advantage of an error to score the game's first run when the first baseman dropped a throw with two outs in the second that allowed Jamie Hatlan to score.
Taylor Keal cruised through the first four innings not allowing a hit until Krista Kelly led off the Ranger fifth with a home run to left field.
The Lady Miners got that run back in the bottom of the frame on Kat. Smith's RBI double to right that scored Lindsey DeForest all the way from first. They had a chance for more but a groundout to third ended the rally.
Parkside tied the game again in the sixth with a pair of two out hits and had a chance to take the lead but Keal got a pop out to first to avoid further damage.
The Rangers had a golden opportunity in the seventh getting a one out triple to center, but just like in the sixth Keal was able to work around the triple by getting a ground out back to her and a strikeout to end the frame.
Keal worked around a lead-off walk in the eighth setting up the late game heroics.
Krista Porterfield started the rally with a one out single to the pitcher. After a sacrifice by Lauren Briggs moved Porterfield to second, Sardigal sent the Lady Miners home happy hitting a 0-2 pitch to the opposite field to drive in the winning run.
S&T outhit Parkside 8-4 in the second game led by Porterfield with two. Six others had a hit for the Lady Miners.
Keal went the distance allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four and yielding four free passes. She improved her record to 8-3 on the season.
S&T will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Lewis University in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
