Box Score 2 (Joplin, Mo.) - The Missouri S&T Lady Miners bounced back from a tough loss in game one to win game two
2-0 behind a five-hit shutout from
Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) and some great defensive plays. S&T fell in game one at Missouri Southern
8-0 on Tuesday afternoon in Joplin, Mo.
The Lions had the second game's first scoring chance putting two on with two outs but couldn't score the runs.
S&T took advantage scoring the game's first run the second inning.
Kassi Deibert (Highland, Ill./Highland) got the inning started with a single through the right side.
Stefani Moore (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo ) came on to pinch run and moved to second on
Coley Naughton (Alton, Ill./Alton)'s sacrifice bunt. A groundout to the right side moved Moore to third and she scored on
Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs)'s double to right center.
The Lady Miners added to their lead in the third taking advantage of two out error that allowed
Lindsey DeForest (Fulton, Mo./North Callaway) to reach.
Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Ky./Union County ) then drove her home with a double to left center.
Missouri Southern tried to answer in the home half of the third loading the bases with two outs but Keal got a fly out to
Katie Smith (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) to end the threat.
The Lions threatened again in the fourth putting two on with one out but Keal got a line out to
Krista Porterfield (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) and a fly out to
Lauren Briggs (LaMonte, Mo./Knob Noster) to escape the jam.
Southern had one more threat in the sixth loading the bases after the first two were retired but Keal was able to get out of the jam getting a one-hopper back to her for the final out.
Keal retired the Lions in order in the seventh to complete the shutout.
Drage and Kay. Smith combined for four of S&T's seven hits and drove in both runs.
Keal improved to 5-2 allowing only five hits while striking out three but allowed six free passes.
In the opener the Lady Miners fell behind the Lions in the second inning giving up three runs with the big blow being a two-out, two-run single back up the middle of the bat of Natalie Nelson.
Missouri Southern added two more in the third on a throwing error with the bases loaded.
The Lady Miners had a chance to get back into the ball game putting runners on the corner at the with one out, They weren't able to score though as
Coley Naughton (Alton, Ill./Alton) was robbed of a hit on a diving catch by the center fielder and
Becky Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara HS) was called out at third for leaving early.
The Lions scored another a run in the fourth then scored their final two in the fifth with the last run scoring on a two out error.
Davis had the lone hit for S&T doubling to lead off the fourth inning.
Ashley Wallingford (Kahoka, Mo./Clark County ) had her three-game winning streak snapped allowing eight runs, four earned, on nine hits while striking out four and allowing four free passes.
The Lady Miners return to action this weekend when they travel to Indianapolis to take on the Greyhounds on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. (CST).
