S&T rallies in nightcap for sweep of Bellarmine

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners trailed 5-0 after 1 ½ in the second game of its doubleheader against Bellarmine, then rallied for 6-5 win to complete the sweep of the Knights on Saturday afternoon in Rolla. S&T won the first game 3-1.

The Lady Miners (7-5, 3-3 GLVC) started their rally in the bottom of the second when Kassi Deibert singled to right with two outs to score Becky Davis cutting the deficit to four.

S&T tied it in the third scoring four runs, all with two outs, Kaylea Smith doubled to center to drive in Lauren Briggs and Kate Runyan to cut the lead in half. Davis kept the rally going with a single to left advancing Lindsey DeForest, who pinch ran for Smith, to third then she advanced to second on the throw. Deibert came through once again singling to center which brought both runs in to tie the game at 5 all.

Bellarmine (9-15, 3-3 GLVC) loaded the bases on three walks in the fourth inning but were unable to score as Taylor Keal got out of the jam with a ground ball to second.

The Lady Miners grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a double off the right field fence by Kristen Drage that scored Briggs.

Ashley Wallingford came on to start the fifth and loaded the bases with two outs, but she left them loaded by getting a strikeout to end the threat. Bellarmine had two runners on base in each of the sixth and seventh innings but Wallingford was able to work her way out of trouble getting a strike out to end the sixth and then struck out the last two hitters of the game looking in the seventh.

The Knights stranded 14 runners in game.

Keal picked up the win pitching four innings allowing five runs, three earned, on three hits while walking eight and striking out one. Wallingford earned her first save of the season tossing the final three innings allowing no runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking only one.

S&T had eight hits in the nightcap led by Deibert with three. Five other players had at least one hit. Deibert also drove in three of the six runs. Davis and Briggs scored a pair of runs each.

The first game of the doubleheader was a pitcher's duel for the first four innings with neither offense able to do much damage. The Lady Miners scored the game's first run in the second inning on a single by Jennifer Sardigal that scored Deibert from second.

Wallingford worked her way out of a two on, two out jam in the fourth inning getting a grounder to short to end the threat.

Deibert gave S&T a two run lead leading off the fifth inning with a home run down the right field line for her second four bagger of the season. Drage extended the lead to 3-0 in the sixth hitting an opposite field home run for her third round tripper of the season.

Bellarmine scored a run in the top of the seventh and had the tying runs on base with nobody out before Wallingford retired the final three hitters to end the game and pick up the win.

She went the distance allowing a run on six hits while striking out four and didn't walk a batter and improved her record to 3-3.

Deibert led the Lady Miners offensively with a pair of hits and runs scored.

S&T returns to action on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Northern Kentucky in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
