(Joplin, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners opened its 2010 season winning a slugfest over Missouri Southern
15-10 on Friday evening in the Missouri Southern/Pittsburg State Border Battle in Joplin, Mo.
After a scoreless opening frame the Lady Miners (1-0) got on the board first in the second when Becky Davis singled home Kate Runyan for the first run of the season. Katie Smith drove home Davis with a single up the middle to make it 2-0. With the bases loaded Jamie Hatlan drew a walk forcing in the third run then Maggie Schroeder hit a two run single through the left side to make it 5-0 with only one down in the inning. Kristen Drage and Runyan had back-to-back RBI singles to make it 7-0 then Davis drove home her second run of the frame with another single to finish off the eight run second.
S&T sent 13 hitters to bat in the inning tallying six hits, and took advantage of a couple of errors and a pair of walks.
The Lions (1-6) answered with three of their own in the bottom of the second; all three were unearned, with the big blow being a two out two run single down the left field line.
The Lady Miners got those runs back in the top of the fourth scoring on an error and two runs off a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.
Missouri Southern continued to hang around getting five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Brooke Hurley had a two run single in the inning then Dawn Grass delivered the big blow with a three run homer to center field to make it 11-8.
The Lady Miners added a pair of runs in each the fifth and sixth innings to extend the lead to seven runs before the Lions finished off the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Schroeder led the S&T offensive outburst with four hits, three runs batted in and three runs scored. Drage finished the contest 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Davis and Smith each added a pair of hits in the contest as the Lady Miners finished the game with 14 hits.
Ashley Wallingford picked up the win tossing the first four innings allowing eight runs, five earned, on six hits with three strikeouts while allowing five walks. Taylor Keal pitched the final three innings giving up a pair of runs on three hits, struck out three, but allowed a pair of walks.
The Lady Miners return to action on Saturday afternoon in the Missouri Southern/Pittsburg State Border Battle taking on Northwest Missouri State at 12:30 p.m. and Fort Hays State at 4 p.m.
