Lady Miners sweep past Saints

(Rolla, Mo.) – It wasn't exactly pretty but the Missouri S&T Lady Miners swept past the Maryville Saints 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-23) on Tuesday night in Rolla.

S&T (9-7, 4-3 GLVC) led from start to finish in the opening set as it got out to a 9-3 lead to start the match. The Saints (2-16, 1-6 GLVC) pulled within three points a couple of different times but each time the Lady Miners had the answer.

S&T led by as many as nine in the frame and finished with 18 kills against two errors in 37 chances to hit 43.2 percent. Maryville finished the first set hitting 22.2 percent with 12 kills in 36 chances.

The second set was a repeat of the first as the Lady Miners got out to big lead and wouldn't look back as they hit over 40 percent for the second straight set and had 17 kills to take the commanding 2-0 lead.

The final set was the closest of the evening featuring 11 ties and five lead changes. The Saints got out to an early lead before S&T came back to tie it up. The two sides then proceeded to trade points over the next 20 points. Then with the score tied at 14 all, S&T went on a 6-1 run to take command of the set and grab a 20-15 lead. Maryville closed to within a point on two different occasions but the Lady Miners were able to put the Saints away on a kill by Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) to win the set 25-23.

S&T finished the match hitting 33.3 percent recording 52 kills against 13 errors in 117 chances. Bekebrede and Samantha Klump (Ash Grove, Mo./Homeschooled) had 11 kills apiece to lead the Lady Miners. Katie Herington (Kalona, Iowa/Mid-Prairie) and Jessica Laughary (Wheaton, Mo./Wheaton) chipped in with eight kills apiece. Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) had 34 assists while Bridget Williams (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 21 digs.

The Saints hit 19 percent for the match and were led by Beth Bruemmer and Kari Blankenship with 11 kills apiece. Andi Neff dished out 28 assists while Neff and Kayla Huesgen had 10 digs apiece.

S&T hits the road for a pair of games this weekend beginning on Friday evening at Drury. The match, which will be the first athletic event in Drury's new O'Reilly Events Center, begins at 7 p.m.
