(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners definitely had its chances but committed too many errors in a 3-0 sweep against Southern Indiana on Friday night at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
S&T (11-12, 5-6 GLVC) trailed for the early portion of the opening set before going on a 5-1 run to take a 12-9 lead. After the Screaming Eagles (14-10, 7-4 GLVC) tied the match at 13 all the two sides began to exchange points. Trailing 17-16 the Lady Miners scored four straight to regain the lead at 20-17. They couldn't hold the lead though as USI got a pair of kills to get back within one then S&T committed three straight attack errors to give the Screaming Eagles a 22-20 lead. The Lady Miners tied it with back-to-back kills from Katie Herington (Kalona, Iowa/Mid-Prairie) and Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) but couldn't regain the lead. USI retook the lead on a kill by Katie Knott, but Wright countered with a kill of her own to tie it back up. Danielle LaGrange set up the Screaming Eagles with set point with a kill, but Janae Curnutt committed a service error to tie it back up.
USI regained the lead as Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) went up for a block on an attack by Abbi Williams but was called for a block error giving the Screaming Eagles a second set point. USI took advantage of this one as LaGrange and Jorae Bradbury blocked an attack by Bekebrede to give the Screaming Eagles the first set 26-24.
USI hit 29.6 percent in the opening set and had 11 kills while the Lady Miners hit 5.4 percent and had 14 kills but committed 12 errors.
The Screaming Eagles scored the first four points of set two, but S&T rallied with four straight of its own to notch the match back up. The two sides then went back and forth as they matched each other point for point. USI then took control of the match with an 8-0 run and didn't look back on the way to a 25-14 win.
The Screaming Eagles had 12 kills against four errors in the second stanza to hit 25 percent. The Lady Miners on the other hand struggled to get its offense going finishing with a negative hitting percentage.
The third set started out like the first two with USI grabbing the early lead. S&T responded though battling back to take a 12-8 lead midway through the final set. But just like the first two sets the Screaming Eagles used a 6-1 run to regain the lead at 14-13. Samantha Klump (Ash Grove, Mo./Homeschooled) tied it back up for the Lady Miners with a kill at 14 all, but it would be the last tie of the night. USI then proceeded to run off eight of the next 11 points to take a 22-17 lead.
S&T got as close as three on two different occasions but each time the Screaming Eagles had the answer including match point as Brittani Oliver recorded a kill to end the set and the match at 25-21.
LaGrange led USI with 12 kills while Oliver had 11. The Screaming Eagles finished the night with 42 kills against only nine errors to finish the match hitting 32.4 percent.
Klump and Wright combined for 23 kills to lead the Lady Miners. S&T hit 30.4 percent in the final set to raise its hitting percentage to 12.3 percent for the match.
The Lady Miners will be back on Saturday night taking on Kentucky Wesleyan at 5 p.m.
