Brinkmeyer’s goal lifts S&T past Saint Joseph’s 1-0; Miners clinch first round home game

10/23/2010 12:02:22 AM

(Rolla, Mo.) – How ironic? Last season the Missouri S&T men's soccer headed into their final game at Saint Joseph's knowing they needed to win finish in the top four of the GLVC. They led 2-0 with 35 minutes to play but lost 3-2. Flash forward to Friday night under similar circumstances the Miners were able to avenge that loss with a 1-0 victory on Spencer Brinkmeyer's goal 11:28 into the second half and secure a first round playoff game at home next weekend.

Brinkmeyer scored on a diving header right in the middle of the box off a free kick by Sam Shaffer (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) and Peter Haw (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ). Shaffer started the play by sending a short pass to Haw who then placed a perfect pass to Brinkmeyer who headed it past the diving keeper inside the far post for his first of the year.

S&T (8-3-3, 8-2-3 GLVC) had several other great scoring chances but the Pumas Alex Makin made some unbelievable saves in the second half to keep it a one goal game. The Miners took 11 shots in the second, six on goal and limited Saint Joseph's to only five shots, one on goal.

Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) needed to make only two saves on the night as S&T set a new school record for shutouts in a season with nine, breaking the mark of eight set two years ago.

The Miners dominated the first half outshooting SJC 8-1 but each side had a shot on goal.

S&T concludes the regular season on Sunday against Indianapolis beginning at 12 p.m.
