Lady Miners fight hard but fall to No. 8 Lewis 3-0

(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners gave it all it had but couldn't quite get over the hump as it was swept by 8th ranked Lewis 3-0 (23-25, 14-25, 23-25) on Saturday in Rolla.

The opening set on Saturday was pretty evenly matched with 12 ties and six lead changes. The Lady Miners (8-7, 3-3 GLVC) took the lead about midway through the opening set building an 11-8 lead. The Flyers (13-2, 5-1 GLVC) responded with a 10-2 run of their own to build the largest lead of the set at 18-13.

S&T responded with five straight to tie the set up at 18 all. The teams then traded the next three points before Lewis took a 21-19 lead on a Lady Miner miscue. Once again the Lady Miners hung tough with two straight points to tie the set at 21-21. S&T retook the lead on a kill by Samantha Klump (Ash Grove, Mo./Homeschooled) at 23-22, but it would be their last lead of the set as the Flyers ran off three straight to take the opener.

Each team hit well in the opening frame with Lewis having the edge 22.5 percent-to-17.9 percent. Both squads had two players apiece with four kills in the opening set. The Flyers were led by Lauren Seliga and Carley Perschnick while the Lady Miners were led by Klump and Kit Spears (Valley Center, Kan./Valley Center).

S&T held an early lead in the second frame, but after that it was all Flyers as they pulled away with a couple of long runs to take it 25-14.

Lewis finished with 14 kills against one error in 41 chances in the stanza to hit 31.7 percent. The Lady Miners were held to a zero hitting percentage recording seven kills but had seven errors in 49 opportunities. Danielle Mount had four kills for the Flyers in the frame while Klump had three to lead S&T.

Lewis led for a majority of the third set and built a 22-11 lead and appeared to have the match in hand, but the Lady Miners ran off 11 straight points to it up at 22-22. S&T forced five errors, three of them blocks, had five kills and a service ace in the run.

It wasn't meant to be though as the Flyers ran off the next two points to set up match point at 24-22. The Lady Miners staved off one match point but couldn't escape another as Mary Carroll recorded a kill to end the match.

Both teams hit above 22 percent in the final frame but it was Lewis who had the edge hitting 24 percent while S&T was at 22.5 percent. Katie Lindsey had six kills in the finale to lead the Flyers while Klump had five to lead the Lady Miners.

Lewis finished the match hitting 26 percent and had 48 kills in 131 chances. S&T hit 12.5 percent and had 33 kills in 128 chances. The Flyers finished the match with eight blocks while the Lady Miners blocked five.

Mount and Seliga had 12 and 10 kills respectively to lead Lewis. Rachel Ruedi had 37 assists while Jen Krumwiede had 12 digs.

Klump finished with 12 kills to lead S&T. Spears dropped in six while Katie Herington (Kalona, Iowa/Mid-Prairie) and Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) had five each. Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) had 29 set assists while Bridget Williams (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 19 digs.

The Lady Miners conclude their three-game home stand on Tuesday night with a match-up against Maryville University beginning at 7 p.m.
