Box Score
(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners dug themselves into a two goal second half deficit and couldn't climb out of that hole in its 4-2 loss to Southern Indiana at home on Sunday. The loss snapped S&T's three-game winning streak and dropped them into sixth place in the conference standings.
The Lady Miners (6-4, 6-4 GLVC) scored the game's first goal eight minutes in on Kirstin Kurilla (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville)'s second of the season. Kurilla was wide open on the back post and knocked home a pass from Morgan Lockowitz (Trenton, Ill./Wesclin ) into an open net.
It wouldn't remain that way for long as the Screaming Eagles (10-3, 8-3 GLVC) tied it just over three minutes later when Paige Nuelle took advantage of an S&T miscue and blasted one in from 25 yards out.
The game remained tied for the rest of the half though both sides had several scoring opportunities. The Lady Miners best chance to break the tie came with less than 10 minutes to play in the frame when Jaclyn Standfast (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) hit a cross into the middle of the box that was knocked down by the keeper but nobody was home to put away the rebound for S&T.
Each side had eight shots in the stanza with three apiece on goal. The Lady Miners had four corner kicks to just one for USI.
The Screaming Eagles broke the tie four minutes into the second half when Julia Kohnen threw in from the far sideline into the middle of the box and Jessica Scott put it into the back of the net.
USI added to its lead 10 minutes later on a goal by Nancy Newcomer off a rebound of a missed shot.
S&T got one of those goals back in the 62nd minute when Lockowitz headed one in off a corner kick from Paige Smothers (Marion, Ill./Marion). Lockowitz's goal hit off the keeper's hands and off the inside of the post for her fourth of the year.
The Lady Miners kept the pressure and nearly tied the game just over six minutes later but Lockowitz's shot went wide right of the near post. S&T had another chance a minute later but Leah Williams (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) shot was saved by Stepanie Bodamer.
The Lady Miners had two more chances in the final six minutes but both were turned away by Bodamer.
The Screaming Eagles tacked on an insurance goal with 0:01 remaining on Scott's second of the half.
USI had a 12-9 edge in shots in the second half but both sides had six shots on goal.
S&T heads out on the road for the final time in the regular season this coming weekend. The trip starts on Friday night with a match-up against Northern Kentucky beginning at 4 p.m. (CST) in Highland Heights, Ky.
