(Somers, Wis.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners soccer couldn't overcome a fast start by the 25
th ranked Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers allowing three goals in the first 26 minutes in a
5-1 loss on Friday afternoon at Somers, Wis. It was the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both squads.
The Rangers (2-0-1) scored an unassisted goal by Meredith Novak in the 12th minute for the first score and added another one nearly 40 seconds later. The Lady Miners (0-2) threatened with some good opportunities in the next 10 minutes as Shelly Ekholm (Houston, Texas/Cy Springs) and Melissa Young (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias) each put shots on goal but were turned away by the Parkside keeper.
UW-Parkside made it 3-0 in the 26th minute on a goal from Becky Zirlin, before S&T got on the board in the 42nd minute on an own goal from Parkside.
The Rangers controlled the opening period outshooting the Lady Miners by a 10-4 count and 5-3 in shots on goal.
In the second half S&T fired off five shots in the first 20 minutes, two of which were blocked and one that was saved. The Rangers added their final two goals in the 73rd and 75th minutes.
Young led the Lady Miner offense with three shots. Young, Ekholm and Brooke Ryan (Olathe, Kan./Olathe East) all finished with a shot on goal.
S&T returns to action on Sunday afternoon at Upper Iowa beginning at 3:30 p.m.
