(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners scored three goals in a nine minute span midway through the first half and never looked back on its way to its first win of 2009, a
4-1 win over Lewis on Friday evening at the S&T Soccer Field. For S&T it was its second straight victory over the Flyers.
The Lady Miners (1-2-1, 1-1 GLVC) got on the board in the 24th minute on a goal by Kim Morris (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy). Morris fired in a corner kick that had a little extra backspin which kicked off the goalkeeper's hands landing just inside the near post. They weren't done yet adding another goal almost five minutes later when Brooke Ryan (Olathe, Kan./Olathe East) took a pass from Shelly Ekholm (Houston, Texas/Cy Springs) and fired a rocket in from the top of the box to make it 2-0.
Melissa Young (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias) capped off the first half scoring taking a feed from Ryan and shooting it in from the far wing at the 32:09 mark. S&T finished the half outshooting Lewis (1-3-1, 0-2 GLVC) by a 7-0 margin and put five of its shot on net.
The Lady Miners scored again almost three minutes into the second half when Sabrina Drennan (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy) scored off a restart from Paige Smothers (Marion, Ill./Marion) and Young. The Flyers scored their goal in the 64th minute off a restart from about 25 yards out.
S&T finished the contest outshooting Lewis by a 15-5 count and 8-3 in shots on goal. Kelsey Kurilla (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and Catherine Swift (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) each had a save for the Lady Miners.
S&T returns to action on Sunday afternoon hosting another Great Lakes Valley conference game when Illinois-Springfield travels to Rolla for a 2:30 p.m., contest.
