Box Score Missouri S&T's women's soccer team opened its season playing on even terms with Southwest Baptist, but a goal with just over 20 minutes to play decided the game as the visiting Bearcats escaped with a
1-0 victory at the S&T Soccer Field.
After a scoreless first half during which each team had four shots, both teams had good scoring opportunities after the intermission. Lady Miner goalkeeper
Kelsey Kurilla (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) turned away a point-blank shot by Jaymye Ross early in the half, while S&T missed a good chance on a corner kick midway through the half.
The Bearcats broke the scoreless contest at the 68:41 mark when Kelly Isaac slipped a pass from just outside the box to Ross, who got free and pushed a low shot by Kurilla.
SBU outshot the Lady Miners by an 11-10 margin, with Kurilla recording six saves in goal for S&T. Both teams had three corner kicks in the game.
Missouri S&T will return to action Friday when it opens Great Lakes Valley Conference play on the road against fifth-ranked Wisconsin-Parkside at 1:15 p.m. The Lady Miners will also play at Upper Iowa next Sunday to wrap up their trip over the Labor Day weekend.
