Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners' bats came to life in a big way on Tuesday afternoon as it scored 19 runs on 31 hits in sweeping a doubleheader against Missouri Southern
10-9 and
9-1 in six innings at the S&T Softball Field.
In the opener S&T (12-17) got a lead-off homer from
Emily Tucker (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) to take the early 1-0 lead. That lead grew to 2-0 in the second on a two out single by
Krista Porterfield (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) scoring
Coley Naughton (Alton, Ill./Alton) from third.
It grew to 5-0 with a three run third inning highlighted by Naughton's two run double to the left center field gap.
Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Ky./Union County ) drove home Tucker in the fourth to make it 6-0 heading into the fifth.
The Lady Miners defense got a little shaky in the fifth committing three errors which led to five unearned runs in the frame including a three run homer to center field off the bat of Kelli Bax with two outs.
S&T responded though answering back with four of its own in the home half of the inning with
Katie Smith (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) and Drage each doubling in runs. Smith's double drove home
Allison Plummer (Olathe, Kan./Marantha Academy) to make it 7-5 then after an RBI single by
Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood), Drage brought home Porterfield and Tucker with a shot to the gap in left center making it 10-5.
Missouri Southern (13-26) loaded the bases in the sixth with two outs but
Jen O'Hara got a ground ball to Drage to get out of the inning. The Lions made things interesting in the ninth getting a lead-off homer from Brooke Hurley to start the inning. After getting a pair of singles with one out Andrea Childs made it a one run game with a three run homer down the left field line. O'Hara though got a pop up to
Lindsey DeForest (Fulton, Mo./North Callaway) and a ground out to Schroeder to end the ball game.
Schroeder led the S&T offense with three hits while Naughton and
Ashley Wallingford (Kahoka, Mo./Clark County ) had two hits apiece. In all nine different players recorded a hit in the contest including eight of the starters. Drage finished the game with three RBIs and Naughton had two. Tucker scored three runs in the contest.
The 10 runs scored in the opener was a season-high for the Lady Miners as were the 10 runs driven in.
O'Hara picked up the win by tossing a complete game allowing all nine runs, four earned, on 13 hits while striking out eight and walking just two to improve to 6-11 on the season.
In the second game MSSU got on the board first with an unearned run in the top of the first but the lead was short lived as Tucker led off the bottom half of the inning with her second lead-off homer of the day. After a pair of singles and a fly out to left Wallingford gave S&T the lead for good hitting a three run homer to left field that landed in the left fielder's glove but the ball popped out and fell over the fence to make it 4-1.
The offense wasn't done scoring three more in the second on a squeeze play by Schroeder and a two run single back up the middle by Drage.
Kassi Deibert (Highland, Ill./Highland) drove home Tucker with the eighth run of the game in the fourth then Wallingford ended it in the sixth with a walk-off single with the bases loaded for the spread rule victory.
Wallingford silenced the Lion bats for most of the second game allowing just the unearned run on four hits with 11 strikeouts against one walk to even her record at 6-6 on the season.
Drage went 4-for-4 in the second game as the Lady Miners matched their season-high for hits in a game with 18. Five other players had two hits in the game and all nine starters had a hit in the game. Wallingford finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs and Drage drove home two. Tucker, Schroeder and Deibert drove in the other three runs. Tucker and Drage also scored two runs each.
S&T returns to action on Wednesday afternoon with a GLVC doubleheader at Missouri-St. Louis beginning at 4 p.m.
