(Rolla, Mo.) – Jen O'Hara saved her best pitching performances of the season for Sunday tossing back-to-back complete game three hit shutouts in leading Missouri S&T to
4-0 and
2-0 wins over Rockhurst on Sunday. With the wins S&T grabbed the final spot in the GLVC Tournament scheduled for next weekend in East Peoria, Ill.
O'Hara was dominant all day as she needed just 62 pitches in the first game and 73 in the second one to dispatch of the Hawks (19-21, 9-15 GLVC). She threw first pitch strikes to 39 of the 49 hitters she faced in the doubleheader. Of her 135 pitches in the doubleheader 105 of them were for strikes. Of the 42 outs recorded in the contests only two of the outs left the infield as she had 23 ground outs, seven strikeouts, eight pop/line outs and a couple of runners thrown out on the bases.
She ran into trouble in the first game in the third inning giving up a pair of hits but was able to escape the jam when Katie Smith (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) threw out a runner at third to end the inning. O'Hara gave up a lead-off hit in the sixth but was able to work around that getting the next three hitters in order and leaving the runner at second.
S&T (21-26, 10-12 GLVC) got on the board first in the opener scoring three times in third inning. Krista Porterfield (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) started things off with a one out triple to center then scored on Emily Tucker (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy)'s single through the left side. Tucker advanced to third on Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood)'s grounder to third that the third baseman threw into right field trying to get Tucker at second. After a stolen base by Schroeder put two in scoring position, Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Ky./Union County ) doubled them in to make it 3-0.
The Lady Miners added an insurance run in the fourth inning on a successful double steal by Lindsey Deforest (Fulton, Mo./North Callaway), who pinch ran for Kassi Deibert (Highland, Ill./Highland), and Allison Plummer (Olathe, Kan./Marantha Academy).
That would be all the support O'Hara needed as she struck out five Rockhurst batters and didn't allow a walk in the opener. With the win in the opener O'Hara became the school's all-time leader in wins breaking Erin Collins mark of 53.
S&T had six hits in the opener led by Tucker and Deibert with two each. Drage and Porterfield had the other two.
In the second game the Lady Miners again broke on top early stealing their first run in second inning. With runners at the corner Plummer got caught in a run down between first and second and was able to stay in it long enough allowing Becky Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara HS) to score from third. S&T added to its lead in the fourth when Coley Naughton (Alton, Ill./Alton) tripled to right then Davis singled through the left side to drive in the run and make it 2-0.
O'Hara allowed single hits in the first and fourth innings and a lead-off walk in the second but was able to avoid any serious trouble until the fifth when a couple of two out errors put the tying run at second. She was able to get out of the jam though getting Leslie Furdek to ground out to first ending the inning.
She allowed another lead-off single in the sixth before getting a pop out and back-to-back groundouts to end the inning. In the seventh she set down the Hawks in order to get her fourth shutout of the week and improved to 4-1 on the week.
The Lady Miners will now head up to East Peoria, Ill., next weekend to take part in the GLVC Tournament facing off against the top seed which will be determined later on Sunday after all of the games in the conference are played.
