4/22/2009 7:49:21 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners scored four runs in the first two innings and made those stand for a 4-1 win over Southwest Baptist on Wednesday afternoon. The Bearcats won game two 1-0 with a run in the fifth inning.

In the opener the Lady Miners (18-25) jumped on top with a pair of runs in the first inning. Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) got the inning started with one out double to center. A fielding error by the second baseman put runners on the corner then Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Ky./Union County ) and Schroeder executed a double steal for the first run. Kassi Deibert (Highland, Ill./Highland) followed that with a single to left advancing Drage to third and she advanced to second when the left fielder threw the ball away. Ashley Wallingford (Kahoka, Mo./Clark County ) added to the lead with a two out single through the left side bringing home Drage.

S&T added to its lead in the second inning getting a lead-off single from Katie Smith (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) then after a strikeout Emily Tucker (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) doubled to left center putting runners at second and third. Schroeder made it 3-0 with a single back up the middle scoring Smith then Drage hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Tucker.

The Bearcats (21-33) scored its run in the fourth inning putting runners at first and second with one out. A fly ball to right caught by Allison Plummer (Olathe, Kan./Marantha Academy) was the second out and allowed the runner from second to go to third. The run scored when the runner at first got trapped in a rundown between first and second and the run crossed the plate before the third could be recorded.

SBU had a chance to tie the game in the seventh when Jen O'Hara, who came on relief of Wallingford in the seventh, loaded the bases with one out on a pair of hit batsmen and a walk. She was able to nail down her second save of the year though getting a ground out to Schroeder then Coley Naughton (Alton, Ill./Alton) picked the runner off at first to end the game.

The Lady Miners finished the contest with eight hits getting two from Schroeder. Schroeder, Drage and Wallingford each drove in runs.

Wallingford went the first six innings allowing a run, unearned, on five hits and struck out three while walking two to even her record at 9-9.

In the second game the S&T bats were held in check by SBU's Josie Rose who tossed a no-hitter. The game was scoreless through the first four innings despite both sides having their chances.

The Bearcats had the game's first good threat loading the bases in the opening inning with one out but O'Hara got a pop out to second and a ground ball back to her to get out of the jam.

The Lady Miners had a chance in the third inning getting Tucker to second with one out then Schroeder hit a ball to center that landed right in front of the center fielder who threw Tucker out at third. Schroeder advanced to second on the play but was left there when Drage flew out to center ending the inning.

SBU had another opportunity in the fourth getting two on with one out but again O'Hara pitched out of trouble getting a strikeout and ground out to first to end the inning. The Bearcats broke through in the fifth inning when a foul pop up was dropped allowing Krysta Baderdeen new life then she homered to left center on the next pitch for the game's only run.

S&T had the tying run on second and the go-ahead run at first with one out but an inning ending double play to the shortstop ended the threat. The Lady Miners nearly tied the game in the seventh but Becky Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara HS)'s bid for a home run down the left field just went foul.

O'Hara suffered the loss allowing the run, unearned, on eight hits and had three strikeouts against two walks to fall to 9-16 on the year.

S&T closes out the regular season this weekend at home with a pair of GLVC doubleheaders beginning on Saturday at 12 noon against Drury University.
