Lady Miners get split at GLVC leader Quincy; stays in contention for GLVC Tournament

4/21/2009 10:28:25 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Quincy, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners split a doubleheader at Quincy losing the opener 3-1 before rebounding to win the second 3-0 on Tuesday afternoon. With the win S&T moved into a tie for ninth with Rockhurst and are currently a trailing Wisconsin-Parkside by a game for the eighth and final spot in the conference tournament.

In the opener the Lady Miners (17-24, 7-11 GLVC) scored the game's first run in the second on Becky Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara HS)'s two out double scoring Ashley Wallingford (Kahoka, Mo./Clark County ) all the way from first. They had a chance for more but were unable to get Davis home from third. S&T had a chance to add to its lead in the third putting two runners on with one out but a strikeout and groundout ended that threat.

Quincy (24-21, 15-4 GLVC) tied the game in the fourth with a two out RBI of its own then had an opportunity to take the lead in the fifth loading the bases with one out but Wallingford got her grounder back to her for a 1-2-3 inning ending double play. The Hawks though scored the eventual game winner on a home run by their catcher leading off the sixth and then tacked on another run with an RBI single to left for the final margin.

Five different S&T players had a hit in the contest but it left five on base in the loss. Wallingford took the loss going the distance allowing three runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks to fall to 8-9 on the year.

In the second game of the twinbill the Lady Miners got off to a good start when Emily Tucker (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) tripled to right field. After a strikeout, Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Ky./Union County ) doubled to right to bring in Tucker, and then she scored on a bases loaded walk to Davis to make it 2-0. That would be all they got though as Allison Plummer (Olathe, Kan./Marantha Academy) struck out to end the inning.

Those two runs would be all the support Jen O'Hara needed as she held the Hawks without a hit until the fourth inning. She allowed single hits in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but didn't allow a runner past second the entire game. O'Hara finished the contest allowing only three hits and a walk while striking out three and moved within one win of tying the school record for career wins.

Tucker added some insurance for S&T in the seventh leading it off with a home run to left field then O'Hara went out in the bottom of the seventh and set Quincy down in order to getting the complete game victory.

Tucker and Krista Porterfield (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) combined for four of the Lady Miner's six hits in game two while Tucker scored a pair of runs and had a RBI. Drage and Davis finished with the other two RBIs and run scored.

S&T returns to action on Wednesday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader hosting Southwest Baptist beginning at 2 p.m.
