(Springfield, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners snapped a four game losing streak with a pair of run rule victories in its sweep at Illinois-Springfield on Saturday afternoon. S&T won the first
9-1 and the second one
10-0.
The Lady Miners (16-23) jumped out to the early lead in the first inning of game one when Emily Tucker (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) led off the game with her sixth home run of the season. They added two more in the frame when Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) scored on a wild pitch then with two outs and Kassi Deibert (Highland, Ill./Highland) on third, Ashley Wallingford (Kahoka, Mo./Clark County ) singled her home making it 3-0.
S&T added two more in the second when Tucker drove in Krista Porterfield (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South), who led off the inning with a single and stole second, after another steal by Tucker and sacrifice by Schroeder moved Tucker to third Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Ky./Union County ) tripled to right field driving in Tucker for the fifth run of the ball game.
The Prairie Stars scored their lone run of the day on a groundout to second in the bottom of the second making it 5-1. The Lady Miners got that run back in the third with runners on the corner and two outs Porterfield and Katie Smith (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) executed a double steal with Smith scoring on the play.
S&T put the game away in the fourth scoring three times on six hits getting a RBI double from Deibert and run scoring singles by Becky Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara HS) and Coley Naughton (Alton, Ill./Alton) for the final margin.
In that first game the Lady Miners pounded out 16 hits including four extra base hits. Tucker and Schroeder each had three hits apiece while Drage, Wallingford and Porterfield had two apiece.
Wallingford allowed a run on two hits in five innings striking out three and not walking a batter to even her mark at 8-8.
In the second game S&T scored first getting a lead-off triple from Tucker then she scored on a groundout to short by Schroeder. That lead grew to 5-0 in the fourth with the key blow being a three run homer off the bat of Schroeder.
She added her fifth RBI of the game in the fourth with single bringing in Porterfield from second. The Lady Miners added four more in the fifth on a bases clearing triple by Porterfield then Schroeder drove in her sixth run with a double making it 10-0.
Schroeder and Porterfield paced the offense with three hits apiece in the second and combined to knock in nine of the 10 runs in the contest. Tucker finished with two hits and four others had a hit in the game.
With her double in the first game Tucker moved past former teammate Kandi Wieberg for the school's career record in doubles with 50 breaking Wieberg's mark of 49
Jen O'Hara got the win pitching a complete game allowing no runs on three hits and had four strikeouts while allowing four walks improving to 8-15 on the year.
S&T is scheduled to return to action on Sunday afternoon in a GLVC doubleheader at Quincy beginning at 12 noon weather permitting.
