Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners had a 7-3 lead going into the top of the seventh of game one before Northern Kentucky rallied with four runs to tie the game forcing extra innings and eventually winning 8-7 in nine innings. The Norse won game two as well 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at the S&T Softball Field.
In the first game the Lady Miners (14-21, 6-10 GLVC) jumped on top with a pair of runs in the second inning when Emily Tucker (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) singled in Ashley Wallingford (Kahoka, Mo./Clark County ) and Becky Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara HS). NKU (18-16, 8-6 GLVC) got a run back in the third cutting the deficit in half.
S&T added to its lead in the fourth when Tucker doubled to left center scoring Krista Porterfield (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) and then Tucker came around to score on a throwing error by the shortstop, who tried to throw behind Tucker, making it 4-1. The Norse answered back again in the fifth getting a run with two outs on Amanda Smith's RBI single to center.
Coley Naughton (Alton, Ill./Alton) singled home S&T's fifth run in the bottom half of the inning extending the lead back to three. Northern Kentucky wouldn't go away though scoring another two out run in the sixth to cut the deficit back to 5-3.
Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Ky./Union County ) gave the Lady Miners a 7-3 cushion with a two run single over the left fielder's head driving in Porterfield and Tucker and had a chance for more but Kassi Deibert (Highland, Ill./Highland) grounded into an inning ending double play to the third baseman.
In the seventh NKU got a lead-off homer from Jessica Farris to get back within three. After a single and a fly out Shatona Campbell tripled to the gap in right center to make it 7-5. Wallingford got the next hitter to ground out to Davis allowing Campbell to score and make it a 7-6 game. The Norse tied it up when Ashley Gates homered to right field on a 2-2 pitch. Wallingford was able to get out of the inning striking out the next hitter.
S&T had its chances in both the seventh and eighth innings but couldn't get the big hit to win the game in either inning. The Norse scored the game winner with two outs in the top of the ninth on a RBI single from Chelsie Roy that landed just in front of Tucker. The Lady Miners got their first two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth but Davis popped out to short then Katie Smith (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) grounded into a game ending double play to the shortstop.
S&T had 10 hits in the contest led by Tucker with three while Drage and Wallingford had two apiece. Tucker also scored a pair of runs and drove in three more. The Lady Miners stranded 10 base runners in the contest.
Jen O'Hara, came on relief of Wallingford in the eighth, suffered the loss giving up the game winner in the ninth.
In the second game S&T definitely had its chances getting 13 hitters in the contest but stranded 13 runners including leaving the bases loaded in the second and seventh innings.
Northern Kentucky got all of its runs in the fifth inning on a two run homer by Gates and a passed ball allowed April Ehlers, who had tripled, to score the third run.
The Lady Miners loaded the bases with one out in the seventh and had the winning run at the plate but a groundout back to the pitcher and a pop up to second ended the ball game.
O'Hara was the tough luck loser in game two tossing a complete game while allowing only six hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out a pair and didn't walk a hitter.
Four players had two hits for the Lady Miner offense which was unable to score against Roy.
S&T returns to action next Wednesday when it travels north up Highway 63 to take on the Missouri Tigers in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
