Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners trailed 7-2 going into the bottom of the fifth before rallying back to win
8-7. S&T scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh after the first two were retired in picking up a sweep over the Bellarmine Knights after winning game one
6-5 on Friday afternoon in Rolla.
The Lady Miners (14-19, 6-8 GLVC) took a 2-0 lead in game two with two runs in the fourth inning thanks to a RBI double from Kassi Deibert (Highland, Ill./Highland) and a RBI single from Coley Naughton (Alton, Ill./Alton). The Knights (17-25, 7-9 GLVC) though came back in the top of the fifth sending 11 batters to the plate scoring seven runs on eight hits to take the lead.
S&T began to claw back in its half of the fifth with one out Emily Tucker (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) singled to center then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) drove her in with a double to center then she scored on a ground out to short cutting the deficit to 7-4. After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the sixth, Tucker drove in Becky Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara HS) with a double to left with two outs trimming the lead to two. Schroeder just missed tying or possibly giving the Lady Miners the lead when her drive to deep right was hauled in by the right fielder leaving the tying run on second.
Bellarmine loaded the bases in the seventh with one out but Jen O'Hara was able to get back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. In the home half of the seventh S&T's first two hitters were retired before it began its comeback. Naughton got things started with a home run to right center on a 1-2 pitch cutting the lead to 7-6. After a throwing error by the pitcher allowed Ashley Wallingford (Kahoka, Mo./Clark County ) to reach, Davis lined a shot off the pitcher for an infield single putting the winning run on base. Allison Plummer (Olathe, Kan./Marantha Academy) tied the game with a single to right then Krista Porterfield (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) won it with a single off the shortstop's glove.
S&T rapped out 13 hits in the victory with four players having two apiece. Deibert and Naughton each drove in runs apiece while Davis scored a pair of runs.
O'Hara got the win despite allowing seven runs, six earned, on 12 hits and had nine strikeouts against three walks improving to 7-12 on the year.
In the opener the Knights got on the board with an unearned run in the first but the lead was short lived as the Lady Miners strung together three straight hits highlighted by Deibert's double to tie the game at 1-1.
After a scoreless second frame the S&T bats erupted for six hits in the third inning and scored five runs highlighted by Wallingford's three run homer to center field for a 5-1 lead. It added another run on Tucker's groundout to short bringing home Davis.
Wallingford held the Bellarmine bats in check in the fourth and fifth innings but in the sixth she ran into some trouble. With one out and a runner on first Casey Willard hit one right back to Wallingford who threw to second trying for a double play but nobody covered the bag allowing both runners to be safe. After a strikeout Wallingford surrendered a three run homer to Jordan Basham to make it a 6-4 ball game.
After S&T went in order in the sixth, the Knights began to rally with a lead-off single by Katie Wolsiefer. Wallingford got the next two hitters to strike out swinging but Kim Locke singled up the middle allowing Wolsiefer to score from second then Locke went to second when the ball got past Tucker. After a walk put the go ahead run on base Wallingford got the final hitter to ground out to short ending the game.
Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Ky./Union County ) finished the first game going 3-for-4 as the Lady Miners pounded out 12 hits in the contest. Deibert and Naughton had two apiece and five others had one.
Wallingford evened her record at 7-7 tossing a complete game allowing five runs, one earned, on nine hits while striking out 12 and walking just two. She got eight groundball outs in the contest.
S&T returns to action on Saturday morning hosting Northern Kentucky in another GLVC twinbill beginning at 11 a.m., at the S&T Softball Field.
