Box Score 3 Joplin, Mo. - Coley Naughton (Alton, Ill./Alton)'s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Missouri S&T Lady Miners to a
2-1 win over Northwest Missouri in its second game on Saturday at the Missouri Southern Tournament in Joplin, Mo.
The Lady Miners' win over Northwest was sandwiched by two tough losses, a
1-0 defeat at the hands of Washburn to start the day and a
4-3 loss to Pittsburg State as the Gorillas scored three in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.
In the victory, Northwest (5-11) had the game's first scoring chance putting runners on first and second in the opening frame with one out but S&T's
Jen O'Hara got back-to-back ground outs to end the threat. After getting just two hits in their first game of the day in the loss to Washburn the Lady Miner (5-7) bats remained quiet for the first three innings as they were held hitless until
Emily Tucker (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy)'s double to left center with one out in the fourth but were unable to bring her around.
S&T finally got on the board in the fifth getting a lead-off double from
Kassi Deibert (Highland, Ill./Highland) to right center.
Meghann Morrow (Lawson, Mo./Lawson) came on to pinch run for Deibert then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt to third. After Naughton popped out to short
Ashley Wallingford (Kahoka, Mo./Clark County ) came on to pinch hit reaching on an error by the shortstop to score Morrow.
Northwest tied the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI single down the right field line from Kristen Hessel. With runners at second and third and just one out the Bearcats had the chance to take the lead but a groundout to second turned into a double play when Hessel was picked off of second to end the inning.
The Lady Miners winning rally in the seventh started with a lead-off walk to
Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Ky./Union County ) then
Allison Plummer (Olathe, Kan./Marantha Academy) came on to pinch run for her. After a strike out
Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) doubled down the left field line setting up runners at second and third with one out setting up Naughton's heroics. She hit a sinking line drive to right field that the right fielder tried to make a diving catch on but the ball hit in her glove and popped out scoring Plummer with the game winner.
O'Hara went the distance allowing a run on six hits recording six strikeouts and not walking a hitter to improve to 2-4 on the season. Four different Lady Miners had a hit in the contest as they finished with four hits on the afternoon.
Washburn
The Missouri S&T Lady Miners were held to just two hits in the loss to Washburn Saturday morning. The one-run loss was the Lady Miners fourth such defeat of the season.
Washburn (7-13) scored the game's lone run in the first inning getting a lead-off double to center field by Tish Williams who moved to third on a groundout to short. After a lineout back to the pitcher for the second out
Ashley Wallingford (Kahoka, Mo./Clark County ) had a chance to get out of the inning with no damage done but a single up the middle scored Williams.
The Lady Miners (4-7) were unable to muster any kind of a rally while the Lady Blues had great scoring chances in the second and third innings to break the game open. Wallingford's pitching kept S&T in the ball game giving them a chance to come back as she retired 12 of the final 13 hitters she faced from the fourth inning on.
The Lady Miners best chance to score came in the sixth inning getting a two out double to left center field off the bat of
Emily Tucker (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) but they were unable to bring her around as
Becky Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara HS) grounded out to third to end the inning.
Wallingford was the tough luck loser tossing a complete game allowing a run on six hits with three strikeouts and no walks on only 88 pitches. Washburn's Samantha Farris was a little bit better though tossing a complete game shutout allowing only two hits getting four punch outs and allowed a walk.
Pittsburg State
S&T got the lead with a three-run fourth inning, which started with back-to-back hits off the bats of
Rachelle Rhodes (Beggs, Okla./) and
Kassi Deibert (Highland, Ill./Highland).
Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Ky./Union County )'s fielder's choice scored pinch-runner
Meghann Morrow (Lawson, Mo./Lawson) with the first run, then with two outs,
Katie Smith (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) drilled a two-run triple to give S&T a 3-0 lead.
The Gorillas got an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth off
Ashley Wallingford (Kahoka, Mo./Clark County ), then
Jen O'Hara (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) entered the game in the sixth and got out of a jam as Pitt State had runners on second and third with nobody out.
However, PSU got another rally going in the seventh after S&T missed a chance to get an insurance run after
Emily Tucker (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) doubled with one out. Melissa Slayden was hit by a pitch to start the inning, but Cassie Martin was retired on a fielder's choice on a ball back to the circle. But that would turn out to be the last hitter to be retired, as Pitt State strung together a walk, two RBI singles to tie the game and then a game-winning double off the bat of Amanda DeCastro – who had doubled off O'Hara in the sixth as well.
Naughton had two of the Lady Miners' nine hits in the finale as they dropped to 5-8 on the season. The Lady Miners are scheduled to host Central Missouri Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the S&T Softball Field.
