Box Score 2 (Decatur, Ala.) - The Missouri S&T Lady Miners upset 20th ranked Georgia College & State
8-0 in five innings getting a no-hitter from
Jen O'Hara in its first game on Saturday morning then defeated former MIAA rival Truman State
6-1 in the afternoon at the Alabama-Huntsville Charger Chillout Tournament in Decatur, Ala.
In the opener against GCSU, the Lady Miners (3-3) got a run in the second courtesy of a leadoff home run to right field off the bat of
Kristen Drage (Morganfield, Ky./Union County ). They proceeded to add four more in the third getting a two out two run single from
Coley Naughton (Alton, Ill./Alton) as the big blow. That was all the runs O'Hara needed as she breezed through the Thundercat (9-3) order walking just two hitters (the same one twice) and didn't allow a runner past second base as she recorded 13 ground ball outs, three fly outs and two strikeouts in her six inning gem to get her first win of the year.
S&T added on some insurance runs getting two in the fifth and then added one more in the sixth to enforce the run rule. The Lady Miners rapped out eight hits in the contest led by
Emily Tucker (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) and Naughton with two apiece. Naughton finished the game with three RBIs and Drage added two more. Tucker,
Becky Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara HS) and
Krista Porterfield (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) each knocked in a run.
In the second game against the Bulldogs (0-3) S&T again had another multirun third inning scoring four runs on six hits as everybody in the order contributed in the inning.
Lauren Briggs (LaMonte, Mo./Knob Noster) led off the inning with a single then moved over to second on a ground out to short and scored on Tucker's single to center. After
Rachelle Rhodes (Beggs, Okla./) doubled to center Drage singled home her third run of the afternoon to make it 2-0. S&T wasn't done yet though Naughton drove Rhodes home with a sacrifice fly to left and moved Drage to second.
Allison Plummer (Olathe, Kan./Marantha Academy) then singled to left putting runners at the corner allowing Davis to drive in the final run with another RBI single. Nine hitters came to the plate for S&T in the decisive third inning.
The Lady Miners added another run in the fifth when Briggs doubled home Plummer then got another in the sixth with Plummer driving in Drage. Truman got its lone run in the home half of the sixth on an RBI single from Kaliss Holleran.
As a team S&T pounded out 18 hits in the contest and had seven players with at least two hits led by Tucker with four. The top five spots in the Lady Miner went a combined 12-for-23 in the ballgame with five runs scored and three RBIs. Six different players finished with an RBI in the contest.
Ashley Wallingford (Kahoka, Mo./Clark County ) continued her great start to the season by pitching her third straight complete game allowing a run on six hits while striking out 11 and walking just one to improve her record to 2-1 on the young season.
S&T concludes its three day trip to Alabama with two more games tomorrow to close out the Chillout Tournament taking on West Georgia at 9 a.m. followed by a regional match-up with Wayne State at 11 a.m.
