Box Score 2 Rolla, Mo. - The Missouri S&T Lady Miners opened its 2009 campaign by splitting a home doubleheader with Lindenwood on Wednesday afternoon losing the first game
2-1 in eight innings and winning the night cap
5-1.
In the first game each side had their chances in the opening getting runners in scoring position with two outs but were unable to capilatize on the opportunities leaving runners stranded at second and third. The Lady Miners (1-1) had a great chance to score in the third inning with runners at first and second and just one out but
Emily Tucker (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) hit a line shot at the second baseman resulting in a double play to end the threat.
The Lions (3-4) had a chance in the fourth inning loading the bases with one out but Jen O'Hara got a pop out and a lineout to short to end the inning. S&T had another golden opportunity in its half of the fourth but another double play ended the inning.
The Lady Miners scored the game's first run in the bottom of the sixth on a lead-off home run by
Becky Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara HS). Lindenwood responded though in the seventh tying the game on a single through the right side and then had a chance to take the lead with runners at second and third and no one out but O'Hara ended up striking out the three, four and five hitters to keep the game tied.
After the Lady Miners went one, two, three in the home half of the seventh, the Lions scored what proved to be the game winner in the eighth on a groundout to third in which Sophia Galati was able to slide around
Coley Naughton (Alton, Ill./Alton)'s tag. S&T had one last chance in the home half of the eighth getting a runner to second but a pair of strikeouts and a lineout to the pitcher ended the game.
O'Hara went the distance for the Lady Miners giving up two runs, one earned, on eights while striking out eight and walking six to receive the loss. Davis paced the offense picking up two of the four hits.
In the second game S&T scored four times in the first inning highlighted by a two out two run double to left-center off the bat of
Kassi Deibert (Highland, Ill./Highland). That would be all the run support
Ashley Wallingford (Kahoka, Mo./Clark County ) needed as she held the Lions to just one run on four hits striking out nine and walking none to earn the complete game victory. Offensively the Lady Miners banged out eight hits in the nightcap getting two apiece from
Katie Smith (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) and Naughton.
The Lady Miners return to action this weekend traveling to Decatur, Ala., to take part in the Alabama-Huntsville Chillout Tournament. They will begin play in the tournament on Friday taking on Delta State at noon and North Alabama at 2:30 p.m.
