The Lady Miners (4-5-1, 4-4 GLVC) got on the board first in the fifth minute on Brooke Ryan (Olathe, Kan./Olathe East)'s third goal of the season. She received a pass from Kim Morris (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy) then beat the goalkeeper inside the far post. S&T nearly had another goal almost 10 minutes later when Hillary Griffith (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) hit a rocket that just went wide right of the goal. The Tritons (2-7-1, 2-6-1 GLVC) tied things up in the 19th minute off a goal by Maggie Gabris who put it in off of a restart from the top of the box.
S&T regained the lead with about two minutes left in the half when Melia Miller (Richardson, Texas/J.J. Pearce) corralled a loose ball firing a shot that deflected off of the crossbar and found its way into the net.
The Lady Miners finished the frame outshooting UMSL by a 5-4 count and 3-1 in shots on goal.
Both sides had their chances to score in the second half but each keeper came up big with four saves apiece. The Tritons nearly tied it up with about 10 minutes left in the game when Sarah Stone had a one-on-one opportunity but Kelsey Kurilla (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) went to her right to knock the ball away. UMSL had one more opportunity in the final 10 seconds but again Kurilla rose to the challenge making the stop to preserve the win for S&T.
Ryan and Miller combined for six of the Lady Miners 13 shots and five of the seven that were on goal. Kurilla finished the game making four saves.
S&T heads out on the road for a pair of GLVC games next weekend beginning on Friday evening at Evansville, Ind., against Southern Indiana beginning at 5 p.m.
