Box Score Rolla, Mo. - It wasn't pretty but the Missouri S&T Lady Miners were able to overcome a very game Lyon (Ark.) College squad prevailing
70-64 on Wednesday evening at Billy Key Court in Rolla.
The Lady Miners (5-3) led throughout the first half but were unable to shake the Pipers (3-9) who stayed right on their heels answering shot-for-shot. S&T began to widening the distance with a 13-6 run spanning nearly five minutes to build a 10 point lead with five minutes left in the frame.
The Lady Miners built their lead to as many as 12 on two different occasions and appeared to have a 12 point lead heading into the locker room but a foul with :00.5 allowed Lauren Ramsey to knock down a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 40-30 at the intermission.
The Lady Miners shot the ball at a 55 percent clip in the opening frame and held a 20-12 advantage on points in the paint and 10-0 in points off turnovers but the Pipers shot the ball just as well making 52 percent (11-of-21) and were 3-of-6 from downtown.
Lyon opened the second half hitting its first four three's as part of a 18-6 run tying and eventually took its first lead just six minutes in. After a lay-up by
Tamara McCaskill tied the game at 48 each side began trading buckets over the next three minutes.

Jazmine Bell jumper and a three-pointer by
Courtney Kemp put the Lady Miners back up four at the 11 minute mark before Echols cut the lead to 55-53 with a pair of free throws.
The Pipers had their chances to retake the lead over the next three minutes but turned it over three times and made just 1-of-3 at the charity stripe and didn't attempt a field goal.
McCaskill put S&T back up by three with a jumper at the 7:20 mark but a three-pointer by Keshianna Hodges tied the game back up almost a minute later.
The Lady Miners retook the lead for good though at the 6:05 mark on a jumper in the paint by
Lauren Dubbert. Lyon had a chance to tie the game but hit just 1-of-2 at the foul line before
Kylee Grant (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) hit a three-pointer to push the lead back to four.
Lyon cut the deficit to one with a three by Rebecca Whorton but the Lady Miner defense stiffened allowing only one field goal the rest of the way while going 4-of-4 at the foul line in the final 1:13 pushing the lead to five before sealing it on a
Katie McElrath (Owasso, Okla./Owasso) lay-up with 0:23 left.
After its hot shooting in the first half S&T shot just 37 percent (11-of-30) from the field in the second and was only 2-of-10 from downtown while the Pipers connected on 10-for-19 (53 percent) and was 6-of-12 from behind the three point line missing its final five attempts of the game.
McCaskill finished with 18 to lead the Lady Miners and was joined in double figures by McElrath with 10.
Echols led all scorers with 19 points, 12 of which came in the second half, while Ramsey dropped in 14.
