Box Score It was a story of two halves in Missouri S&T's
82-63 loss to 17th ranked Hillsdale College on Sunday afternoon at Bullman. The Lady Miners shot 61 percent in the opening frame but still trailed 40-36 at halftime.
The second half though was an entirely different story as the Chargers opened the frame on a 14-0 run knocking down its first seven shots to extend the lead to 18 points while the Lady Miners hit just 1-of-7 and turned it over six times.
The Lady Miners (1-1) got off to great start beginning the game knocking down their first four shots to take a 9-2 lead. They held the lead until a jumper by Katie Cezat put Hillsdale (2-0) up 19-18 at the 12:04 mark. It extend its lead to nine points on a lay-up by Cezat at the 6:27 mark but then S&T began to climb back into the contest going on a 12-2 run to retake the lead getting a pair of old fashioned three point plays from
Jazmine Bell (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid) get within one then retook the lead on a
Lauren Dubbert (Madison, Mo./Madison) lay-in with 2:38 to play. The Chargers regained the lead though at the 1:24 mark on a jumper by Laura Barczak and then extended the lead by making 3-of-4 from the charity stripe in the final 0:30 seconds.
Bell had 10 points in the opening stanza to lead the Lady Miners while Dubbert had six and
Kylee Grant (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) chipped in with five.
S&T tried to make a comeback in the second half cutting the lead to 15 but it was just too much Cezat, who scored 17 points in the frame, and the Hillsdale offense as it shot 18-for-29 (62 percent) in the second half to pull away for the victory. Cezat finished the contest with 32 points on 15-of-23 shooting while grabbing 13 rebounds and was named the MVP of the Lady Miner Classic. Claire Aubrey and Janay Miller each finished in double figures as well with 13 and 10 respectively while Brooke Knight finished with 10 assists.
Bell finished the night with a team -high 16 points for S&T while Dubbert added 11 more. Dubbert and
Tamara McCaskill (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) were also named to the Lady Miner Classic All-Tournament squad.
The Lady Miners will be back in action on Wednesday evening hosting Blackburn College, a NCAA-III school from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, beginning at 7 p.m.
