Lady Miners offense erupts in 6-1 win over Saint Joseph's

Box Score The Missouri S&T Lady Miners scored four times in the first half on its way to a 6-1 victory over Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at the S&T Soccer Field. The six goals were the most scored in a game by the Lady Miners since beating Northwest Missouri 6-0 on October 10, 1999. The four goals in the first were the most in a half since last September when S&T defeated Upper Iowa 4-2.

SJC (0-9, 0-5 GLVC) struck first scoring just 0:52 in when Sara Ritter took a pass from Rachel Cobean and beat Catherine Swift (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) inside the near post. The Lady Miners (4-4-1, 2-3-1) had some looks early on but couldn't convert.

S&T tied the game in the 20th minute on Brooke Ryan (Olathe, Kan./Olathe East)'s fourth goal of the season. She took a pass from Sabrina Drennan (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy) from midfield then beat the keeper one-on-one. Drennan put the Lady Miners ahead two minutes later when her first shot hit the crossbar and bounced right to her heading home the rebound.

S&T wasn't done yet though as Valerie Crews (Washington, Mo./) got her first two goals of the season in the 34th and 38th minutes. Her first one she received a long pass from Melia Miller (Richardson, Texas/J.J. Pearce) and beat the keeper on a breakaway, and her second she got another pass from Miller and this time beat the keeper inside the far post.

The Lady Miners added to their lead almost eight minutes into the second half when Drennan knocked home her second of the game on a loose ball in the box off a corner kick. They added their final goal with four minutes remaining when Ryan scored again from 20 yards out off a pass from Paige Smothers (Marion, Ill./Marion).

For the contest S&T out shoot Saint Joseph's 21-10 and 13-5 in shots on goal. Ryan finished the game with five shots, four on goal while Drennan had four shots, three on net.
