2-1 overtime win at Emporia State on Sunday afternoon on
Melissa Young (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias)'s goal 2:48 into overtime. Young headed a shot inside the right post off a feed from
Paige Smothers (Marion, Ill./Marion).
S&T (2-1) and ESU (2-1) played to a draw in the first 45 minutes with each side recording seven shots. The Hornets had their scoring chances early putting five on goal but
Stacey Luquette (St. Amant, La./St. Amant ) was up to the challenge while the Miners were held to only three shots on net.
After Emporia scored the games first goal in the 48th minute, S&T turned up the pressure taking 25 shots in the frame including 12 on net but still trailed until
Brooke Ryan (Olathe, Kan./Olathe East) took a cross from Marci Bryd tying the game at the 78:24 mark.
S&T's offense was stymied by the goalie play of Tina Commons who made 11 saves in the stanza before Ryan's goal.
The Lady Miners finished the game outshooting the Hornets by a 34-12 margin and had a 16-8 advantage in shots on goal.
Morgan Lockowitz (Trenton, Ill./Wesclin ) tallied eight shots, two on goal, while Ryan finished with six shots, four of which were on goal. Luquette ended up with seven saves in the contest.
