Mark Mullin is serving as the acting Director of Athletics at Missouri S&T, leading a program that he oversaw for 29 years and enjoyed great success both on and off the field during his tenure.
Over the his final nine years leading the program, Missouri S&T enjoyed a great deal of athletic success headlined by 77 student-athletes earning All-America honors and 357 all-conference selections from the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while 11 of S&T’s teams have competed in NCAA championship competition. The success also carried over to the academic side, where S&T had over 150 student-athletes post a grade point average of at least 3.5 to earn the S&T scholar-athlete award in the 2018-19 season.
Under Mullin’s direction, S&T served as the host institution for the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships as well as the NCAA South Central men’s regional basketball tournament, MIAA men’s basketball finals, the GLVC women’s basketball and men’s soccer tournaments, the MIAA cross country championships and GLVC cross country and track & field championships. He led the process that allowed S&T to move its conference affiliation to the Great Lakes Valley Conference beginning in the fall of 2005.
He led a number of significant facility projects, including renovations of Gibson Arena in the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building and the S&T Fitness Center. Other facility projects that took place under his direction include the installation of artificial turf at Allgood-Bailey Stadium; a new artificial turf intramural field complex; new scoreboards for all of the university’s athletic facilities; varsity weight and fitness rooms; a new indoor practice facility and new sports medicine center.
Prior to that, other facility upgrades or additions have included the Student Recreation Center being constructed; renovation of Allgood-Bailey Stadium to include a new track, lights, concession and restroom facility as well as upgraded seating areas; earlier renovations in the Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building's Gibson Arena with the addition of chair back seats, new floor scoreboards and lighting and upgraded locker rooms, as well as the building of a new soccer complex and indoor practice facility for all of S&T's teams.
In addition to his duties as athletics director, Mullin served as swimming and diving coach for 12 years and led the Miners to a 96-27 dual meet record and seven regional championships. His final team finished third at the 1998 NCAA Division II Championships, the highest finish ever for a Miner athletic team at an NCAA championship event at the time.
Mullin served two terms as the chair of the NCAA Division II men’s and women’s swimming and diving committee and has also served multiple terms on the men’s basketball and football regional advisory committees for the region. He served a two-year term as the president of the MIAA after spending the two prior years as the conference’s vice president prior to S&T’s switch to the GLVC. He was elected and served as the conference’s director of athletics representative on the GLVC Executive Committee.
Academically, Missouri S&T had numerous Academic All-America award winners as the university ranks among the top 10 among NCAA Division II institutions for its total number of Academic All-America winners.
Mullin and his wife Joanie have four daughters, Elizabeth, Katie, Melissa, and Nina and 15 grandchildren. He retired as Director of Athletics in September 2020.
