Dr. Dave Westenberg is Curators Distinguished Teaching Professor of Biological Sciences and has served as the faculty athletics representative since 2013. Before that he served for over 10 years as the S&T pre-med advisor. In 2014, he participated in the NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative Fellows program and in 2018 was a finalist for the NCAA Dave Pariser Faculty Mentor Award. In addition to his research and teaching, he is co-advisor of the Missouri S&T IGEM, synthetic biology student design team and Helix biology club. He is advisor for the S&T Humans vs. Zombies club. Dr. Westenberg has received numerous awards for teaching, advising, and service including the UM System President's Award for Community Engagement in 2020, the American Society for Microbiology Carski Award for teaching and student success in 2020, and the inaugural College of Arts, Sciences, and Business Dean's Medal in 2021.
 

A 1991 graduate of UCLA, Westenberg has earned a number of teaching awards in his tenure at Missouri S&T.  He received the Class of ‘42 Alumni Excellence in Teaching award in 2000, the Extraordinary Faculty Award in 2008 and is a two-time recipient of the university’s outstanding advisor award. 

Westenberg also received the Alexander von Humboldt Fellow award from 1991-93 and again in 2005, the ASM Scholar-in-Residence award in 2007 and 2008 and the Dean’s Teaching Scholar award from 2005-08.
