Todd Drury was named as the head football coach at Missouri S&T on January 11, 2019 following a three-year stint at the program's defensive coordinator. In his first season at the helm, Drury led the Miners to a 7-4 record -- including a win over Division I FCS opponent Texas Southern -- and became just the second Miner coach in the last century to post a winning record in his inaugural season as S&T's head coach. The Miners won two of their three games played in the spring of 2021 after the season was moved to the second semester.
Drury has been on the S&T coaching staff for six seasons, starting out as the defensive line coach in 2015 before moving into the coordinator role a year later.
Drury took the helm of the program after guiding the Miner defense to the top of the GLVC during the two previous seasons, as S&T allowed a league-low 292.2 yards per game in 2018 after giving up 294.3 in 2017 to head the league on that side of the ball.
The Miner defense recorded a GLVC-high 43 quarterback sacks during the 2018 season after posting 37 in 2017 and 35 in the 2016 season under Drury's tutelage. S&T was especially stingy against the run during those last two years, allowing just 102.8 yards per game last season after giving up only 91.3 yards per game to opponents on the ground the previous year.
S&T's defense had two All-America selections in 2018 in linebacker Bo Brooks and cornerback Roderick Chapman, both of whom were ranked among the statistical leaders in NCAA Division II. Brooks and Chapman were among nine members of the Miners' defense to earn All-GLVC honors, which included six first-team selections.
Eight members of the defense earned All-GLVC honors in 2017, including first-team pick Tershawn Wharton who set a new S&T single-season record with 21 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Wharton is beginning his second season as a member of the National Football League's Kansas City Chiefs in 2021.
In 2016, the Miner defense also recorded its first shutout in over five years when S&T posted a 26-0 win over William Jewell and also had a hand in the scoring with an interception return for a touchdown in that contest. The Miners also posted a shutout in 2019 over Southwest Baptist that also saw the defense score a touchdown; S&T had four defensive touchdowns durng the 2019 campaign.
Drury came to S&T from Evangel University, where he spent two seasons as the defensive line coach and strength coordinator for the Crusaders. He was also a graduate assistant at Evangel for three years while working on his Master’s degree in secondary education. He went on to serve as the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Midland University in Nebraska during the 2012 season before returning to his alma mater a year later.
A native of Peoria, Ill., Drury played tight end at Evangel from 2005-08 and served as a team captain during the 2008 season. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Crusaders and was part of Evangel’s 2005 squad that won the Heart of America Conference championship and advanced to the NAIA quarterfinals. He received his bachelor’s degree in social science from Evangel in 2009.
Drury and his wife, Kelly, have two children and live in Rolla.
