Kevin Berger is in his first season as an assistant coach for the Missouri S&T baseball team. Berger comes to the Miner program after a three-year stint as an assistant at Lincoln University, where he worked with the hitters and infielders.
Berger helped the Lincoln squad improve its team batting average by 30 points during that three-year span, including the 200 season in which the Blue Tigers ranked among the top four teams in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in batting average, extra base hits, home runs and runs batted in.
A native of St. Louis, Berger was the “Offensive Player of the Year” and earned all-independent honors at Chaminade High School in 1992 as his team went undefeated and won a state championship. That team was ranked sixth nationally at the end of the season by Baseball America and was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame.
Berger went on to play collegiately at Saint Mary’s University in Minnesota, where he won a batting title in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and earned “Rookie of the Year” honors. He won the MIAC batting title in 1994 with a .418 average (.520 in conference play) and hit .334 during his four seasons at the school. Berger also pitched for the Cardinals and went 14-6 with a 3.50 earned run average and threw two no-hitters.
He earned his Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Saint Mary’s.
Berger played in the St. Louis Metro Collegiate League for four years, finishing in the top five in hitting in three of those seasons and played for a team that represented St. Louis at the NABFA World Series before playing briefly in the minor leagues.
Berger lives in Jefferson City, Mo., with his wife, Mellisa, and daughter, Ema.
