ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T got a goal from
Alexander Burum (Oslo, Norway/Valle Hovin Vgs) in the eighth minute Saturday afternoon and that goal held up as the Miners captured a 1-0 decision over Southern Nazarene in its 2025 season opener at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
Following a Miner corner kick by
Joseph Sommer (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville), Burum knocked the ball past SNU goalkeeper Aimar Aramendia to give S&T the only goal it would need.
From that point, the Miner defense took over as it handed the Crimson Storm (0-2) their second shutout loss in as many games. The teams finished even in overall shots at 11 apiece, but only one of the 11 attempts by Southern Nazarene – a shot by Tiago Moreira in the 20
th minute -- reached Miner goalkeeper
Cavitt Bruhn (Plano, TX/Plano).
The Miners did have four shots on net in the contest and also had a shot attempt by
Owen Verning (Collinsville, IL/Maryville Christian) that caromed off the crossbar late in the second half as the Miners were looking add an insurance tally.
Saturday's win marked the third consecutive season in which the Miners have opened the year with a shutout, as they played to a scoreless tie with Rogers State in 2023 before beating Northeastern State 1-0 last September.
Missouri S&T returns to action Monday when it takes on Kentucky Wesleyan in a 1 p.m. game in Owensboro, Ky.
