Miners Roll to 1-0 in Season Opener

ROLLA, MO  —  Missouri S&T's home opener was nothing short of dominant, as the Miners rolled past Central Methodist 51-10 on Saturday night at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. Powered by a balanced offensive attack and a stifling defense, S&T controlled the contest from start to finish to move to 1-0 on the season.

The Miners set the tone early, scoring 21 points in the first quarter. Quarterback Jake Farrell (Scottsdale, AZ/Notre Dame Prep) connected with Reid Weber (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell) twice and Brennen Taranto (Weston, FL/Western) once to deliver the first three touchdowns of the Miners' season. Central Methodist answered with a 63-yard strike from Jordan Gile to Zyon Slade, cutting the deficit to 14, but S&T immediately responded. The offense marched downfield and capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge to push the lead to 28-7.

S&T carried a 28-10 advantage into halftime and wasted no time adding to it in the second half. Just 90 seconds into the third quarter, the Miners blocked a punt—Tyler Gioia (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison) providing the key play—and returned it for a scoop-and-score touchdown. Later in the quarter, Farrell notched his fourth and final touchdown of the night, hitting Gioia on an 88-yard strike downfield.

In the fourth, Layne Ryals (Louisburg, KS/Louisburg) drilled a 25-yard field goal before Austin Havens (Bixby, OK/Bixby) connected with Isaac Pollard (Lindale, TX/Lindale) for a 22-yard touchdown, sealing the 51-10 victory for the Miners in their season opener.

S&T will look to carry that momentum into next week's road trip to Northeastern State, where the Miners face another non-conference test.
