Miners Rally Late in 2-1 Setback at McKendree

LEBANON, Ill. -- Missouri S&T men's soccer mounted a strong second-half push but came up short in a 2-1 road loss to McKendree on Friday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play at Leemon Field.

After falling behind 1-0 late in the first half, the Miners found their rhythm coming out of the break, generating 15 of their 18 total shots in the second period. Joao Vieira (Punta del Este, Uruguay/International College) put S&T on the board in the 70th minute, firing home his third goal of the season to cut the deficit in half.

S&T continued to press the attack down the stretch, led by Mike Banasik (Loekkegade, Denmark/Hjoering Gymnasium) and Luke Giesing (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh), who each recorded two shots on goal, while Vieira totaled four shots in the match.

In total, the Miners outshot the Bearcats 18-15 and held a 2-1 advantage in second-half corner kicks, maintaining pressure until the final whistle. Cavitt Bruhn (Plano, TX/Plano) made one save in goal, anchoring a back line that limited McKendree to just six second-half attempts.

With the result, Missouri S&T moves to 4-3-1 overall and 2-3 in GLVC play.

The Miners return to action Sunday, October 5, as they face Illinois Springfield, with kickoff scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
