EDMOND, Okla. – Missouri S&T's golf team narrowly missed making a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II Championships as it ended up in sixth place in the final standings at the Central/Midwest Super Regional at Kickingbird Golf Course.
The Miners shot an even-par 280 in the final round to finish the three-day event with a three-under-par score of 837, but ended up as the first team out as the top five finishers – Central Oklahoma, Henderson State, Harding, Grand Valley State and Ferris State – will advance to the national meet later this month in Orlando, Fla.
Ferris State, who ended up in fifth place, finished three shots ahead of S&T. Central Oklahoma won the regional by one shot over Henderson State with a final score of 823. All five of the teams that finished above S&T had under-par rounds on Saturday.
For the Miners,
Jeppe Thybo (Esbjerg, Denmark/Rybners Gymnasium) was the highest individual finisher in a tie for 14
th place as he finished the tournament with a three-under score of 207 after an even-par 70 on Saturday.
Carl Miltun (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) had S&T's best score in the final round with a one-under 69 to finish at 209 in the tournament and in a tie for 23
rd place, while
Cole Komyati (Elberta, AL/Bayside Academy) ended up tied for 28
th with a final score of 210 after posting a 71 in round three.
Isaac To (Petaling Jaya, Malaysia/Real International School) shot 71 in the third round to end up at 215, while
Connor Benjamin (Nelson Bay, Australia/St. Philip's Christian College) had an even-par round Saturday and finished with a final score of 216. Benjamin had an eagle in his round on Saturday, getting it on the par-five fourth hole, while the Miners had 40 birdies over the three days, with Miltun recording 10 and Thybo finishing with nine.
S&T had 10 birdies in its front nine on Saturday – Miltun had three in a row after a double bogey on his second hole and then recorded two more birdies later in the round – while Thybo, Komyati and Benjamin all posted three birdies apiece during the round.
The Miners finished two shots ahead of Missouri Southern for the sixth place spot and six in front of Central Missouri and Indianapolis, the next-highest finisher from the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
