SMITHVILLE, Mo. – Missouri S&T's golf team qualified for the match play portion of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships Monday by completing a third place finish in stroke play, while
Carl Miltun (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) took third overall at the tournament as it concluded on a windy afternoon at Paradise Pointe Golf Course.
Playing in winds in excess of 20 miles per hour was problematic for all of the teams on the course Monday, with the Miners posting the best team score of the day of 302. That score put the Miners' final total at 880 for the event and allowed them to advance to Tuesday's semifinal match against Missouri-St. Louis, who edged S&T by one shot for second.
Meanwhile, Miltun – who came into the final round holding a share of the lead – ended round three with a 77 to finish at one-under-par for the tournament at 215. He finished two shots behind UMSL's Cyril Henault, who he was tied with at the start of play on Monday, and one shot in back of Drury's Hunter Jowers. Miltun did lead all players in the tournament with 13 birdies.
S&T had one additional top-10 finisher in
Connor Benjamin (Nelson Bay, Australia/St. Philip's Christian College), who shot a 75 on Monday to finish in a tie for ninth place at 219.
Cole Komyati (Elberta, AL/Bayside Academy) had a score of 224 to finish in a tie for 19
th, while
Isaac To (Petaling Jaya, Malaysia/Real International School) finished at 225 and in a tie for 21
st overall.
Jeppe Thybo (Esbjerg, Denmark/Rybners Gymnasium) had the Miners' best score of the day on Monday with a 74, putting him at 229 and in a tie for 29
th place.
Indianapolis finished with a four-over-par score of 868 to earn the top seed for match play and will take on McKendree in the other semifinal matchup on Tuesday. The semifinals will get underway at 8 a.m., with the championship match to follow later in the day.
