GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Missouri S&T was dominant on the course for the second day in succession and finished with a runaway victory at the Maverick Spring Invitational at Palm Valley Golf Club, as well as getting the tournament medalist in
Carl Miltun (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field).
The Miners won the 36-tournament by a whopping 26 shots over Concordia-St. Paul with a 13-under-par score of 563 and were the only team to finish under par in the two-day tournament. Three of the five Miners that were included in the scoring shot under par on Tuesday, led by Miltun's 67 that allowed him to win medalist honors with a score of 134.
Miltun had pars on only three holes on Tuesday, as he finished his round with an eagle on the 14
th hole and eight birdies on the afternoon; he led all players with 15 birdies in the tournament.
Connor Benjamin (Nelson Bay, Australia/St. Philip's Christian College) and
Nicolas Estrada (Zaragoza, Spain/IES Valdespartera) each shot a 69 on Tuesday, while
Isaac To (Petaling Jaya, Malaysia/Real International School) posted a score of 74 and
Cole Komyati (Elberta, AL/Bayside Academy) had a 78.
Overall,
Carter Schmitt (Baton Rouge, LA/Catholic) – who was playing as an individual in the tournament – tied for third along with Estrada with a score of 142, while Benjamin's 69 brought him back to even par overall and to a sixth place finish in the tournament. To finished in a tie for 12
th at 146, while
Joey Friedel (St. Peters, MO/Fort Zumwalt South) was in a tie for 19
th at 149, Komyati tied for 26
th with a score of 150 and
Jeppe Thybo (Esbjerg, Denmark/Rybners Gymnasium) had a one-under 71 to rise to a tie for 38
th in the 93-player event with his overall score of 153.
The tournament win was the second for the Miners on the season as they also captured the Panther Invitational to close the fall portion of the schedule.
S&T's next competition will take place on March 16 and 17 at the Saginaw Valley Spring Invitational that will take place in Lexington, Ky.
