ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team will head to the Kansas City area for two Great Lakes Valley Conference contests over the weekend, as the Miners will take on a pair of teams also looking to gain traction in the conference race.
The Miners will face Rockhurst Friday in a 7:30 p.m. match, then head up to the northern suburbs of the Kansas City area for a Sunday contest against William Jewell at 2:30 p.m. S&T, who is 1-3 in GLVC play and 2-5-1 overall, is playing two teams that are still looking for their first win in conference play and that have scored a combined eight goals this season.
S&T picked up its first victory of the campaign Friday when it made a first half goal by
Shane Cairns (North Olmstead, OH/North Olmstead) hold up for a 1-0 victory over Southwest Baptist. However, the Miners fell 2-1 Sunday to Drury, as a Panther goal in the final 10 seconds of the opening half turned into the decisive goal after Mike Banazik scored midway through the second half.
Banazik scored his third goal of the season and holds the team lead in that department. Cairns and
Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) have three points apiece on an goal and an assist, while three other Miners –
Santiago Cervantes (Collierville, TN/Collierville),
Joao Vieira (Punta del Este, Uruguay/International College) and
Derek Schlenker (Chandler, AZ/Hamilton) have also hit the net for S&T.
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) has recorded a 1.95 goals against average in 691 minutes of action and has made 29 saves in eight games.
ABOUT ROCKHURST: The Hawks enter this weekend at 2-4-1 overall, but are 0-3-1 in the GLVC and are winless without a goal in their last four contests. Rockhurst earned a tie with Missouri-St. Louis on Sept. 17, but lost road games to Indianapolis and Lewis last week as it is seeking to snap a scoreless streak that has reached 364 minutes. Five different players have scored for the Hawks – Tomasso Tirabassi has a goal and an assist – while goalkeeper Fabio D'Errico has a 1.33 goals against average in 540 minutes of play.
ABOUT WILLIAM JEWELL: The Cardinals have dropped all seven of their games thus far and are 0-4 in conference play after losses to Lewis and Indianapolis last week. William Jewell has scored just three goals, two courtesy of Alexis Ibarra, while Jose Arellano and Olay van Zanten have split the goalkeeping duties. The pair has a combined goals against average of 2.71 with 30 saves.
