ROLLA, Mo. – For the second consecutive day, two student-athletes from Missouri S&T's golf team has earned national honors – but in this case, it is for their work in the classroom as they were named to this year's NCAA Division II Academic All-America team by the College Sports Communicators.
Jeppe Thybo (Esbjerg, Denmark/Rybners Gymnasium) was named to the first team on the Academic All-America squad and
Carl Miltun (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field), who was selected to the PING Division II All-America squad on Tuesday, was named to the third team. It is the first Academic All-America selection for both individuals and they are the second and third to earn the honor; the only previous Miner to earn the award was Brian Panka in 1997.
Thybo is majoring in physics at S&T and had an average of 73.2 shots in his 33 rounds of play this season, with a top finish of third at the McKendree Invitational. He also placed fourth at the Watkins Invitational and posted his top 54-hole score of 215 at the Findlay Spring Invitational as well, where he finished in sixth place.
Thybo, who finished in a tie for 36
th place at the NCAA Division II Championships, was also the golf team's nominee for the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award.
Miltun, a mechanical engineering major at Missouri S&T, won medalist honors at the GLVC Championships for the second time in his career in 2023 and also finished first at the Findlay Spring Invitational during the season. He would go on to post finishes of fifth at the NCAA Central/Midwest Regional and a tie for 14
th at the national meet. Miltun's season also included a second place showing at the Tunica Cup and added a third place finish at the Hillcat Classic in Oklahoma.
During the season, Miltun averaged 71.3 shots in the 33 rounds he played. He set new GLVC records in his winning performance at the conference championships by posting an overall score of 203 to finish 13 shots under par and winning the event by 10 strokes. His second round score of 63, the lowest in GLVC history, also tied the course record at Paradise Pointe Golf Course.
The Miner duo was named to the at-large squad, which covers sports that do not have sport-specific teams and includes sports such as men's volleyball, lacrosse and wrestling. Thybo and Miltun were among seven student-athletes from Great Lakes Valley Conference schools that were selected to the Academic All-America squad.
