Miners return home looking to climb into playoff mix

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team looks to make its way back into the Great Lakes Valley Conference playoff race this weekend as it be at home for matches against Missouri-St. Louis and McKendree.

The Miners, 2-6-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the GLVC are tied with three other teams for eighth place in the conference standings heading into the weekend.  One of those three is UMSL, whom the Miners will face Friday at 7:30 p.m. before McKendree comes to town for a 2:30 p.m. contest on Sunday.

S&T lost a 1-0 decision to Rockhurst on Friday last weekend, then let a two-goal lead slip out of its grasp Sunday at William Jewell as the Cardinals tied the game on a penalty kick in the 89th minute.  The Miners got goals Sunday from Sam Bresette (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) on a penalty kick and from Santiago Cervantes (Collierville, TN/Collierville), who currently ranks second on the team in scoring with two goals on the year.

Mike Banazik has three goals to lead the Miners, while Shane Cairns (North Olmstead, OH/North Olmstead) has a goal and an assist.  In goal, Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) has played 781 minutes on the season and has a 1.84 goals against average with 34 saves.

ABOUT MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS: The Tritons come into play Friday looking to snap a four-game winless streak and a three-game losing streak after falling in a pair of 1-0 decisions to Indianapolis and Lewis.  UMSL has only scored once in its last four games, which came from co-scoring leader Ty Gordon.  Gordon has two goals on the season along with Devin Livingstone and Luca Saewe, while Austin Reis has played all seven games in goal and has a 1.00 goals against average and 30 saves.

ABOUT McKENDREE: The Bearcats have vaulted to the top end of the GLVC standings in the early going with a 3-1-1 conference mark (10 points) and are 5-3-1 overall on the season.  McKendree opened GLVC play with three straight wins, then after a loss to Lewis last Friday, played to a 1-1 tie Sunday with Indianapolis at home.  Rhys Davies leads the Bearcats with seven points on two goals and three assists and goalkeeper Christian Herluf has a 0.78 goals against average in 810 minutes.
