Miners seek first GLVC wins on weekend swing in Kansas City

9/21/2022 11:30:00 AM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team head back on the road looking for its first victory in Great Lakes Valley Conference play with two contests scheduled for this weekend in the league's western outposts.

The Miners will open their weekend swing through the Kansas City area with a 7:30 p.m. contest Friday at Rockhurst, then head up to Liberty, Mo., to take on William Jewell on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.  The Miners are currently 1-3-2 on the season and 0-1-2 in the GLVC after rallying in the second half for a 3-3 Monday night at Quincy.

S&T trailed by two goals on two different occasions Monday, but got a goal from Afxentis Andreou (Paphos, Cyprus/Lykeo Agios Charalambous) late in the first half to cut the Hawk lead to one.  After Quincy regained its two-goal advantage, the Miners got goals from Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) and Jacob Bandy (Bettendorf, IA/Pleasant Valley) just over five minutes apart to tie the game with just under 20 minutes to play and ended up finishing in a tie.

Semlitsch, who also scored the Miners' lone goal in a 3-1 loss to Truman State on Friday, leads the Miners with three goals on the season.  He is one of eight players in the GLVC with at least three goals this season and is tied for fifth in the conference in that category.

Andreou and Bandy recorded their first goals of the season on Monday, joining Pablo Gomez (Madrid, Spain/IES Neil Armstrong) and Shane Cairns (North Olmstead, OH/North Olmstead) as Miners who have posted goals this year.  Meanwhile, goalkeeper Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) – who has played 509 of the team's 540 minutes in the nets – has a 2.12 goals against average with 27 saves in six games.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT: Rockhurst is unbeaten through five games this season and is 2-0 in the GLVC; the Hawks have outscored their two GLVC foes – William Jewell and Southwest Baptist – by a combined score of 10-1.  Added with a non-conference win over Newman just before GLVC play started, the Hawks have outscored their opponents 13-1 over their last three games.

Kaden Cripe has a team-high three goals and seven points on the season and is one of 11 Hawks that have scored goals this season.  Winder Pessoa and Chase Klusman have two assists apiece to go along with a goal each has scored, while goalkeeper Andrea Dorella has made 21 saves while recording a 0.40 goals against average.

William Jewell has played just three games to date – it will play at Missouri-St. Louis on Friday prior to the Miners' visit to Liberty on Sunday – and has a win, loss and tie over those three games.  All three have been played within the GLVC, where they earned a tie with Drury before winning 3-1 over Southwest Baptist on Sunday.

Carson Lee has scored two of the four Cardinal goals this year, while Walker Bond has a goal and an assist.  Jose Arellano has a 2.00 goals against mark and has made 11 saves on the year.
