S&T seeks to earn GLVC playoff spot on final home weekend

10/19/2022 11:30:00 AM

ROLLA, Mo. – With one weekend remaining in the Great Lakes Valley Conference season, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team will look to retain its spot among the top eight in the standings and earn a spot in the conference tournament as they play a pair of home contests over Homecoming weekend at S&T.

The Miners, who are currently tied with McKendree for seventh place with 13 points in the standings based on its 3-3-4 GLVC record (S&T is 4-6-4 overall), will host Lewis Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium before closing its regular season slate Sunday with a 2:30 p.m. matchup against Indianapolis at the S&T Soccer Field.  Friday's game will also be Pink Night for Breast Cancer Awareness at S&T.

S&T and McKendree are currently one point in front of Truman State and William Jewell and one point ahead of Missouri-St. Louis, with the top eight teams qualifying for the GLVC Tournament that starts Oct. 30.  The two opponents for the Miners this weekend, Lewis and UIndy, are among the three teams that have already clinched berths to the conference tournament and are trying to secure home games in the opening round.

The Miners got a critical win on Friday at McKendree when they shut out the Bearcats 3-0 behind two goals from Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole), but lost 7-1 Sunday to league leader Maryville and will need positive results in the final weekend to make the field.  Truman State and William Jewell face one another on Sunday as do McKendree and UMSL.

Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria), who along with Evan Birsinger (Friendswood, TX/Friendswood) will be honored on Senior Day prior to Sunday's contest, leads the Miners with six goals and four assists on the season while Semlitsch has also scored six times.  That duo is tied for fourth in the GLVC in goals, while Jorgensen ranks in a tie for second with his 16 points.

Jimmy Sanchez (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell Central) has added two goals and a team-high four assists for eight points, while Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) has played 1,203 minutes in goal and owns a 2.24 goals against average with 45 saves.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: Lewis clinched its spot in the GLVC Tournament after routing Rockhurst 5-1 on Sunday behind three goals from Cristian Perez, the Flyers' leading goal scorer on the season with seven which ranks second in the GLVC.  Zahkar Shkidchenko has three goals and two assists, while Arturs Gorodnickis and Justin Darlage have two goals and two assists apiece.  Sebastian Doppelhofer has the second-lowest goals against average in the GLVC at 0.66.

The Flyers will come into Friday's game at 8-3-2 overall and 6-2-2 (20 points) in the GLVC.  They are unbeaten in their last five outings with four wins and a tie in that stretch.

Indianapolis – coached by former Missouri S&T head coach Gabe Hall – is 8-2-3 on the season and tied with Lewis for second place with an identical 6-2-2 mark in the GLVC.  The Greyhounds have won six games in succession and have outscored their opponents 17-3 during their current winning streak.

The Greyhounds have three players with at least five goals apiece, led by Seth Ward with six on the year.  Michael Tselios has four goals and three assists for 11 points, while Ibo Yilmaz has five goals on the season after posting two in UIndy's 5-0 win Sunday over Southwest Baptist.  Joey Schrand has a 0.71 goals against average in 1,010 minutes of playing time.
