ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri S&T's
Ally Hasken (Freeport, IL/Freeport) broke a scoreless tie in the 86
th minute to give the Miners a season-opening 1-0 win Friday afternoon over Saint Martin's at the Lou Fusz Soccer Complex – and ended a nine-year drought in the process.
The Miners got a corner kick opportunity and when the Saints were unable to get the ball cleared out the box, Hasken hit a shot past goalkeeper Ali Campigotto for the only goal of the contest.
The win was the first in a season opener for the Miners since 2012 when they posted a 1-0 win over Wayne State (Neb.); S&T had gone 0-6-2 in its last six opening games of a season.
Saint Martin's, a member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, had the run of play for much of the first half and outshot the Miners 10-2 over the first 45 minutes of play, but all three of its shots on goal were turned away by S&T goalkeeper
Kristin Steins (Ballwin, MO/Parkway South).
The game started to tilt in the Miners' favor in the second half – part of which was played in a downpour – and S&T had a couple of good scoring chances as the half wore on.
Sydney Gratz (Geneva, IL/Geneva) had a good chance in the 58
th minute that was turned away by Campigotto and
Lily Chung (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central), who had just entered the game, had two good opportunities in the box, one that was saved and another that was blocked by the defense preceding Hasken's game-winning goal.
Saint Martin's outshot S&T 14-7 for the game, but the Miners had a 5-4 advantage in the second half and also had five of their eight corner kick chances during that span.
Viktoria Johnson (Granite City, IL/Granite City) played the second half in goal for the Miners and made two saves to preserve the shutout.
The Miners return to action Sunday when they take on fourth-ranked McKendree in a noon contest in Lebanon, Ill. Sunday's game will be a non-conference game between the two Great Lakes Valley Conference schools.
