Miners, Hawks Play to Scoreless Draw in Double Overtime

ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T women's soccer team was back on the grass Sunday afternoon at the Missouri S&T Soccer Field to wrap up their three game homestand against Rockhurst. For the second Sunday in a row, the Miners (3-2-2, 2-1-2) found themselves playing a match going the full distance, and for the second Sunday in a row, played a match that resulted in a draw, as after 110 minutes of action, S&T and the Hawks (3-4-1, 2-1-1) finished the match the same way it had begun, with zeros on the scoreboard.

The first shot of the day went to the Hawks in the 11th minute but Kristin Steins (Ballwin, MO/Parkway South) made the save diving to her left to turn away the try.

Quality scoring chances were tough to come by in the first half but Sydney Gratz (Geneva, IL/Geneva) had several looks at goal, missing left twice and being denied by the Rockhurst keeper on a third try. Lexi Frederick (Warrenton, MO/Warrenton) also had a good look on goal, but was also denied on a save.

Going into the intermission, the score remained 0-0 with S&T holding a 6-3 advantage in shots in the period.

The second half again saw both sides struggle to find quality scoring chances. Steins saved the opening shot of the period in the 48th minute and Lily Chung (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central) misfired moments later, unable to find the net.

The best scoring opportunity for either side in the match came in 63rd minute. Following a foul in the penalty area, the Miners were awarded a penalty kick which was to be taken by Danielle Hopkins (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley). The shot looked true but sailed just off the mark as S&T was unable to net the first goal of the day.

The two sides battled back and forth for the balance of regulation but neither found a definitive edge to put them on the board as regulation time expired with still no score.

Rockhurst controlled the tempo in the opening period of overtime, managing three shot attempts two of which missed their mark and the third being saved by Steins. S&T couldn't muster any looks on goal as the first 10-minute extra period came and went with no change on the scoreboard.

On a clear, warm and sunny day, by the time the two sides took the field for the second overtime period, the fatigue was beginning to show. Neither the Miners or the Hawks managed a shot attempt over the final 10 minutes of play as the afternoon came to close with a 0-0 draw.

Steins finished the day with three saves in goal and recorded her third-straight shutout. Gratz led the Miners with four shots while Hopkins had three looks of her own that missed their mark. For the match, the Hawks outshout S&T 13-9 and finished with a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

Sunday's match etched this fall's edition of Missouri S&T women's soccer into the record books, as for the first time since 2003 and just the fourth time in program history, the Miners recorded their fourth consecutive shutout. The previous two instances happened in 1986 and 1997.

The Miners only have one game on deck this week, kicking off a three-game road swing starting with a match against Drury in Springfield, Mo., on Sunday, October 3 at 12 P.M.
