Miners seek to extend winning streak at home this weekend

9/22/2021 11:00:00 AM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T has shown a knack thus far in the 2021 season of pulling out wins in the waning moments of games and will look to sustain the winning streak that has resulted from it this weekend with a pair of home matches in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

The Miners will seek to extend their four-game winning streak Friday when they host Southwest Baptist in a 7:30 p.m. game, then wraps up a three-game homestand Sunday with a visit from Rockhurst for a 2:30 p.m. contest.

S&T extended its winning streak to four and improved to 4-1 on the year with two games won in the final moments last week.  First, the Miners got a goal from Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) in the 88th minute to snap a tie in a 2-1 win at William Jewell, then needed almost all of two overtime periods to get the only goal of Sunday's home opener with Truman State, as Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) scored with 28 seconds remaining to elevate S&T to 3-0 in GLVC play for the first time since becoming a member of the conference.

Luan Barbosa (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio SESI), who scored the other goal for the Miners in the win over William Jewell, is one of seven S&T players to have scored a goal this season and is the only one with two goals.  Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) has a goal and two assists, while Leyton Harper (Andover, KS/Central) has a goal and an assist on the year.

Goalkeeper Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic), who made five saves in the shutout win Sunday, has a 1.66 goals against average with 19 saves in 379 minutes of action.  Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) had a shutout in his only appearance in the nets this season and has made seven saves.

For the first time this season, the Miners find themselves ranked among the top 10 teams in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region by the United Soccer Coaches, as the Miners are ninth in this week's regional rankings.

ABOUT SOUTHWEST BAPTIST: The Bearcats are still seeking their first victory of the season, as they are 0-4 overall and 0-2 in GLVC play following a 2-0 home loss Sunday to Rockhurst.  SBU has been outscored 8-2 in those four games and was shut out in both of its conference games, with the other loss coming at the hands of William Jewell.

Pierre Lurot has a goal and an assist to lead SBU in the scoring department, while the other goal was scored by Gauthier Vareilles.  Will vanHoornbeek has seen the bulk of the playing time in goal and has a 1.70 goals against average in 264 minutes of action.

SBU beat the Miners 1-0 last season in Bolivar, with the only goal coming on an own goal in the first half.

ABOUT ROCKHURST: The Hawks' win at Southwest Baptist Sunday was their first in GLVC play after a loss to Drury in their league opener and second overall as Rockhurst brings a 2-4 overall mark into play Friday at Maryville.

Jordan Andrews leads Rockhurst in scoring with two goals on the year, both of which came in a win over Colorado-Colorado Springs, while Alessandro Macchioni has a goal and an assist thus far on the season.  Fabio D'Errico has a 1.64 goals against average in 495 minutes and has been credited with 16 saves.

S&T pulled out a 2-1 win over the Hawks last March in Kansas City, getting second half goals from Dario Rossell (Madrid, Spain/IES Lazaro Cardenas) and Barbosa to overcome a halftime deficit.
