S&T looks to sustain early momentum with pair of weekend contests

ROLLA, Mo. – With a comeback win at Quincy in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener under its belt, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team will seek to keep that momentum going this weekend when it returns to conference action with games on Friday at William Jewell and Sunday in its home opener against Truman State.

The Miners (2-1, 1-0 GLVC) overcame deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 Sunday, scoring twice in the final 10 minutes to defeat Quincy 4-3 for their first win in a GLVC opener since 2014.   S&T will now head into Friday's 7:30 p.m. game in Liberty, Mo., against the Cardinals looking to begin a conference slate with back-to-back wins for just the second time since becoming a member of the GLVC in 2005.

On Sunday, the Miners trailed 2-0 at halftime but got goals from Jacob Bandy (Bettendorf, IA/Pleasant Valley) and Dario Rossell (Madrid, Spain/IES Lazaro Cardenas) in the first 18 minutes of the second half to tie the game.  Quincy regained the lead less than 90 seconds after Rossell had evened the score, but Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) tied it up again with a goal in the 81st minute and then made the pass to Luan Barbosa (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio SESI) for the game-winner in the 86th minute.

Five Miners have scored thus far on the year – Leyton Harper (Andover, KS/Central) has the fifth goal from S&T's win over Northeastern State – while goalkeepers Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) and Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) have combined for a goals against average of 2.00.  Sallee has made 11 saves on the year, while Joseph made seven in his one start.

ABOUT WILLIAM JEWELL: The Cardinals opened their conference season on a winning note as well, knocking off Southwest Baptist 1-0 on Jack Mason's goal late in the first half.  William Jewell brings a 1-2 overall mark into the game as it dropped non-conference games to Colorado Christian and Rogers State.

Mason has one of the two goals scored by the Cardinals this season, with the other coming from Sage Smotherman in the loss to Colorado Christian.  Meanwhile, goalkeeper Eli Gratz has played all 270 minutes in goal and has made 17 saves to go along with a 1.33 goals against average; he recorded nine saves in the win on Sunday.

The Miners and Cardinals played to a 1-1 tie in last year's meeting in Rolla.

ABOUT TRUMAN STATE: The Bulldogs are still seeking their first victory of the 2021 fall season, as they lost non-league matchups to Upper Iowa and defending NAIA national finalist Central Methodist prior to a 1-0 loss in their GLVC opener Sunday to Drury.  The Panthers scored early in the second half to decide the contest.

Sam Newton has the only goal this season for Truman on an unassisted tally in the game with Upper Iowa, while Evan Witte has seen most of the time in goal with a 2.13 goals against average and 13 saves in 253 minutes of action.

Newton's overtime goal gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 win over the Miners when the teams met in the season opener last spring in Kirksville.
